As of today I have only taken 4 days of PTO this year. REALLY looking forward to taking the family to Disney world later this week. My wife's company holiday part is in Orlando. She leaves Wednesday and the boys and I are heading out on Thursday. It is a large fortune to take the family there but this is probably the last time. The boys are 10 and 7 so they will both still really get engaged with the magic. We went 3 years ago and the younger one barely remembers it and even our older one only remembers some of it. Looking forward to some much need R&R.It's a time of the year to go too. Summertime in Orlando is a humid drag. They just opened a ton of new Star Wars stuff of you're into that.
It is going to stupid humid and likely thunderstorms for a majority of our time which really stinks but who knows. There is always rain during the day in central florida each day so that isn't a shocker.
There is a ton of new star wars stuff and that is super exciting. A little nervous about availability of this as the waits have been crazy long for these attractions as the excitement of the new movie is a bit crazy right now. The time frame we are going is actually one of the best weeks of the year for low crowds the entire year. It is just before the christmas holiday and the crowds are historically very low (of course that is somewhat relative). Even the worst ride wait times are still pretty reasonable (by disney expectations) this time of year. Just have to plan the rides you really want and hit those early along with fast pass and it will all work out ok.
Have fun, Sean. It's a great vacation.
Thanks Ed. I have already packed the exact same outfit I was wearing when we did the standard picture in front of the castle so I can recreate the look this time around with bigger children. Should be pretty funny.
That should be a cool picture to put next to the older one.
Don't forget to pack some rain ponchos or other wet-weather gear. When we last went in 2012, we got some decent rain ponchos for $3 each and stuffed them in our carry-around-the-park bag. When it started raining every afternoon, we whipped them out and didn't have to pay $8 each for the thin-as-rice paper ones that tear and fall apart as you take them off. You're a captive audience when you're in the park and they know it.
Where are you staying? Do you have your dinner reservations made already? I remember it was impossible to get in anywhere decent without reservations.

Target has disposable rain ponchos for a little over a dollar each and I have 16 of them packed. We have reservations made for nearly every meal already. My wife found a really cool website that you can enter your ride preferences, fastpass times (those are now available online ahead of time), character encounters even things like preference for short wait times or minimize walking and it puts together a plan for the park for each day. That is a bit over the top for me as I don't like having my time planned out but it seems like a reasonable guideline to start with for each day. We were there last exactly 3 years ago. In fact the castle picture was 3 years ago this last Sunday. 😉
We are staying at Pop Century. It is a bit cheaper and the rooms are not all that big but in reality the room is only used about 8 hours a day anyway so who cares? I will toss up a picture when we get back.

It seems that most of the kinks have been worked out. Your post came through loud and clear.

Perfect timing for the announcement. I have my year-end review with my boss tomorrow, which will include us making plans for conferences, training, etc in the new year.

You know, it really bites when you made plans (nothing major, nothing that can't be pushed back to the afternoon / evening / next day,) and then because of something work-related, you have to reschedule it...
I work a compressed work schedule 8 days I do 9 hours / day, 1 day I work 8 hours, and I get every other Friday off. Well, next Friday was my day off, and by happy coincidence that also happens to be a day I'm sure Gail is waiting for...
Star Wars: The Force Awakens release day!
So, the wife, myself, and friend bought tickets for a 10am showing...
Monday of this week, I was told I needed to move my day off due to an audit next week. I cheerfully went ahead and rescheduled, because hey, now I can go to my wifes in-office holiday party the following week!
Then today I realized what was going on next Friday...
Ah well, the price paid to be a decently-paid DBA (plus, I'm still working from home next weekend to apply MS OS updates to my servers...)

SQLBits is going to be iffy for me. I need to be back here on Sun, May 8, so I may have to check if I can speak on Friday to come over. I'd hate to miss it, but that's not a great week for me.

It's releasing here on the 16th, which is a public holiday. However I don't enjoy opening night crowds, so I'm going with some friends on the Friday.
I do want to see if anyone at work reacts to how I intend to dress that day... 🙂
One of the things I like about my current company and boss is that they understand that I have a life outside of work. For example, boss asked once if the 2pm meeting could be moved to 4:30PM. I told him that I was leaving at 4 because I had something on at 5pm and it was about 30 min drive away. He didn't argue, just asked for a good time for the next day. When organising business trips to Cape Town earlier this year, he asked suggested flying to CT on the Sunday and back Wednesday evening. Told him I had roleplaying Monday evening. So he suggested flying down Tuesday and back Saturday.

And speaking of the boss, I just sent him an email with no text, just two screenshots. Flight prices Johannesburg to London return, train prices London to Liverpool return. Let's see what he makes of that.

Me either. They've placed it directly next to the PASS BAC, which I have to attend. I'll by flying right from the one to the other... ah well.

Grant - I'd forgot it would be that close to BAC, that's annoying.
Steve - that's a pain as well, hopefully you can make it. It wouldn't be the same etc...
I still need to work out what I am doing. That Yes gig is a problem. They are playing Liverpool on the Monday, but very few tickets left. Or the Royal Albert Hall the following week, but also not much left.
The symphony hall in Brum is an exceptional venue, and I bought it within seconds of them going on sale, so pretty good seat!
I see registration opened today as well for it.
