On the current topic, a very favorite question: When do you use the function "WhatTimeIsIt()"?

    Three options given

    1) To get the current time (wrong)

    2) You don't (correct)

    3) Time for the applicant to leave (also often correct)

    😎

If the bbq ribs are coming off the grill, time to eat might be my answer.

Otherwise, isn't it the 42nd parameter for DBCC TimeWarp?

Which I think always returns 3.....

When the elephant sits on your fence.

Except on Tuesdays in odd-numbered months of even-numbered years unless they're leap years.

But if it is a leap year and not raining then it is the 43rd parameter.

I thought it was the 34th. That's what happen when I use the manga version of the parameters documentation. :hehe:

Once I interviewed someone that claimed to have experience on Oracle but not much on SQL Server. I told that person to answer based on Oracle (which was the main technology in his last claimed project) and couldn't come up with the basic functions either.

So many people lie on their resumes to get past recruiters so the ones that avoid to lie but are knowledgeable won't get to the interviews.

That is a big pet peeve of mine.

Used to be one of mine too. Partly though it's the employers' HR people (or the high and mighty managers above the recruiting managers) who are to blame. They invent requirements that are mostly nonsense - a list of everything that only a really exceptional person could meet listed as essential prerequisites and an additional lis of "would also be useful" stuff that blows the thing up to ridiculous size. Then they tell the recruitment agency that they only want to see resumΓ©s from people who scoure 100% on the essential bits and have at least 20% of the also useful items, and that they'll pay 45k pounds per annum (I'm thinking of pay scales of more than a decade ago) with minimal other benefits. Since anyone who could actually match the requirement could get at least 100k and decent additional benefits and the rcruitment agents don't dare send them CVs that clearly don't fit the requirement, the only CVs that will be passed on will be full of overstated skills and experiences, in fact mostly a pack of lies. Then someone like Geoff (or me) ends up interviewing them (and finding it hard to be polite).

This seems to be a US and Western Europe and India problem, as far as I can tell. And it's a fairly new problem - I didn't get any of this when recruiting in the 70s. Nor in 2006 recruiting to create a development division in Beirut: technical people (led by me) determined the requirements, and vetted the CVs; since we'd written realistic specs, and our chairman of the board (aka president the other side of the pond) knew very well what real pay rates were like in Beirut for people at the levels beginner to do divisional director (vice-president, who would be CEO in a few years if he could cut it) we wanted we were talking realistic qualifications and experience and realistic pay. We had a very good range of people to interview, and made more than a dozen offers in one week of interviewing - enough people to get things off the ground. In a couple of years we moved all technical work (development, QC and release, customer support, supplier relations, etc.) to Beirut and when that was clearly working I retired; and the team out there is doing a great job.

And then people like that end up getting the job and tainting the industry. Let's say they get hired at a rate of 110k/yr (not knowing anything). When they leave the company is frequently opposed to paying that much, or even more, because that was a very knowledgeable (and senior level) person that wAas paid scads of money to not be able to fix their problems. If they couldn't do it, nobody can do it.

110k (dollars) sounds rather cheap but I guess it depends on where the job is: there are several cities in Britain where you couldn't get a very knowledgable and senior level DB developer or DBA at that rate (and US pay for techies is supposedly higher than British) and there are also cities where 73k (pounds) would definitely be scads of money.

No you don't. The 14th octet is the pointer to the country where you have to check to see if it's raining. Use the 15th and 16th octets for the exact GPS location within the country. 15th = X; 16th = Y; Z is not supported yet. πŸ˜›

Except for the Postgre, that's pretty standard stuff. Silly, yes, but not surprising. Before I left my last company, my boss sat down with me and insisted that we list out everything I knew, worked with or touched. The list was shockingly huge. However, I kept saying "Yeah, but I only helped that group for a couple of days." Didn't matter, Dynamics CRM was on the list. Looking at it, I would never apply to the job, and it was my job that it supposedly described.
