Are the posted questions getting worse?

Could have called it 2 easy steps to forum happiness! I don't know what do you guys think? lol

It might be a bit much, but I know what you mean. It makes things so much easier to read.

I think the (sometimes arduous) task of getting people to post DDL, consumable sample data and expected output is more of a hindrance to being able to help people. The excuse of proprietary table design and PII is old. Table designs are just designs and I don't know what's confusing or ambiguous about the term sample data.

I admit that I'm quicker to help if someone takes the time to create a good post and actually asks a question.

I just generally replace the word "proprietary" with "hideous" or "embarrasing" in my mind when I see that. If your data structures are so overly complicated you have to copyright them then you are simply doing it wrong. And if the developers are working with PII then their whole environment is doing it wrong.

Agreed...the main reason I hesitated was because it's hard enough getting DDL or sample data (which is way more important), that also asking for some formatting/prettification might be approaching wishful thinking territory.

I often just do it for them (thanks to SQL Prompt), repost & hope that embarrasses them into doing it next time.

And Phil, your signature says a lot, too. Please do ask a question. Posts such as "here's what I have...now what do I do?" just don't cut it. It's so aggravating to try and pull an actual question out of someone after they've posted am 80-column table DDL and a 2000-line procedure. No description. No problem. No question.

I think the uncooperative ones bug me the most, though. You ask a question in response and get some irrelevant point or an excuse about why they can't answer it, but they still want an answer. There are those who possess the crystal ball and hit the nail on the head with some consistency - Lynn comes to mind. How he comes up with some solutions with such scant information is beyond me. He takes divination to a high art - and he's good at it.
