I forgot how much *FUN* it is to open up a shiny new (well, used in this case) server to poke about the guts and see what's there.../swoon
Brought my new toy home last night, perused the guts a little, started figuring out what it's going to be set up with and do in my home lab.
Had to order the rack rails and drive caddies for it, but those were cheap (caddies >$10/ea, rails are refurbs and less than $30) and should arrive next week. Now tonight I need to hook a monitor, keyboard up to it, and fire it up just to verify it's working (which it should be, it was sold as working.)
Maybe tonight I'll even put up some pics of it, some "server porn" for those into that sort of thing...
:hehe:
Is this the first server you have in your rack? You know, you're going to have to start thinking about a KVM switch soon.
Oh heck no, it's my first "name brand" server, rather than a home-brew.
I've got a 4 port KVM right now, the rack I bought came with an 8-port but no cables (and *of course* they're proprietary cables) plus I've got another 8 port rack mount I bought years ago that has a weird quirk of "beeping" even when no one is near it...

Hmm...
The server is a *little* bit loud...
Like, sitting on the workbench, basement door closed, can still hear the fans roaring on the main floor loud...
This...
Could be an issue...

Loud server is a huge issue.
Loud server could be a "return it or sell it" issue...
I'm hoping, and will find out for sure when I get the rack rails, that it quiets down once it's up and running, that it's only during the initial boot up that it runs the fans full-speed...
I hope.

How old is it? If the fans have a lot of mileage on them, you may be able to find new ones with the bearings in better shape. This may be able to quiet it down a bit.
I worked on an HP server years ago that sounded like it was about to take off when you first started it up. After a few seconds, things calmed down and the noise was much better.

Dell R900 from about 2010 when I looked up the service tag on Dell.
If I recall, a couple Dell R720s at my old job did the same thing, on initial start up it sounded like you were starting a wind tunnel, then they settled down and quieted down significantly...
I don't have a drive yet in the server (need drive caddies) but once I get one, I'll be able to test this out...

IIRC there should be a bios setting / mode for the fans which regulates the speed according to the load and the internal temp sensors.

Yes!

Lots of fans in something like that.
Take the case off and make sure it's clean inside.
Fans should settle down if it is not running hot.

Will listen / watch the first 2 or 3 live. And maybe the last couple. Then the recordings...
Must say Alex is doing a fine job of keeping the Great British end up! :w00t:
It's his first summit this year as well, attendee as well as speaker.

A few weeks back, we were talking about password managers. Someone mentioned LastPass and I've been looking into it. But the odd thing is, there's no mention of how LastPass does the device synching. Is it a cloud service? A portable executable?
Can someone who uses LastPass speak to its multi-device synching?

Likewise. I need to spend tonight rehearsing and finalising presentations for tomorrow and Saturday.

I'm using the paid version of LastPass and I'm not sure if what I'm about to say works exactly the same for the free version.
LastPass operates using both a cloud service and local app. I have it installed on each of my computers and on my Windows phone. Each device has a local copy of the database that is accessible whether or not you have internet access. There's also a cloud database with a copy of all my information. Each local database gets synced with the cloud database when there's changes made and I'm getting on a times/event basis too.
On each computer, I access my data/password mainly via web browser plugins/addins to either log me into what website I'm accessing, or to capture new, or changed, login data.
If I'm using somebody else's computer an I need one of my passwords, I have the option of logging into the web service and looking up the password I need. That's probably the only time I use the web service.
Maybe this will help: http://www.howtogeek.com/77319/the-how-to-geek-guide-to-getting-started-with-lastpass/

don't use LastPass. I use PasswordSafe on multiple devices. I have the database files stored on DropBox, and on the laptop (Win10), desktop (Win8), laptop (OXS), I just open the free app pointed to the database on a Dropbox folder locally.
On my old Android and current iPhone, I have a paid app that connects to the Dropbox folder on the cell phone and opens the apps. On the iPhone, I have TouchID integration.
