OP is looking for: "... I just looking for good understandable explanation by pptx slides for (Index internals & Isolation levels as well) and some demo scripts for the same."

Why am I thinking he has a good reason for not saying why he needs the PowerPoint and demo scripts? 😎

    https://ask.sqlservercentral.com/questions/127307/index-internals-ppt.html

Sheesh what a tool. The guy who responded even has demo scripts. I agree, this guy sounds like he wants to grab somebody else's presentation because he convinced somebody to let him do a presentation on a topic he isn't qualified to discuss and now is having a panic attack because it is more complicated than they realized. Would be fun to be a fly on the wall at that presentation, just make sure to bring a fire extinguisher and some popcorn.

Sterrett's stuff is pretty good. He even recommended the MCM videos. If the OP really just wanted to learn, the provided information was more than adequate.

Agree, but you don't need PPTs to learn. 😀

True. But I provide my ppts after sessions I give. It is a nice tool for review for some. On the flip side, I have put less and less information on my slides anyway. So looking at my deck will be less useful to somebody trying to reproduce the session for themselves. 😀

Reminds me of a few years ago, when some MVP were caught using other people's blog post, word for word.

Yeah was thinking the same thing. It is really shocking how hard it is to shake that perception once it has been demonstrated to be fact. I have a hard time with that given blog still just because of that.

Every table name and every column name are exactly 6 UPPER case letters.

I feel your pain. Baan's tables were named using a multi-part naming convention that made it a bit silly to try and remember. Example:

    t$ttdsls040400

    t$ttdsls041400

t$ = Prefix necessary for all tables and columns.

t = Prefix that does nothing except add another "t" to the table name.

td = Package the table is a part of. TD, logically, means Triton Distribution.

sls = Module the table is a part of. SLS means Sales.

040 = Which table it is. Naturally, 040 is Sales Orders and 041 is Sales Orders Lines. Not Sales Order Lines, but Sales Orders Lines.

400 = The company number. You can have multiple companies set up in one database, each with their own set of tables. The company number is the suffix for everything.

The columns where not quite as bad, but almost:

    t$orno

    t$pono

    t$txta

    t$txtb

t$ = Prefix necessary for all tables and columns.

next 4 = Field name. Clearly, orno = Order Number, pono = Position Number, txta = pointer to the text table for the this text entry. Note I didn't say foreign key, because where were none.

    The text table was: t$tttxt001400.

Obviously, the package "tt" is Triton Text, the module "txt" is Text and the table was 001. There was no 002.

And yes, the whole thing was case sensitive in both object names and values.

See why it gave me nightmares?

Ah, how I miss that ...

It makes me both happy and sad to know that someone else knows the pain.

  • I don't know if it's just me, but SSC has been having some blocks of time where it's very slow recently. I had one this morning where it took about 30 seconds to load a single page. It seemed to go away after about 10 minutes, but I remember seeing the same thing last night. Other sites function normally, so I'm wondering if there's a job running or new process that's slowing things down.

It's the stock market activity slowing things down. 😀

Kidding. I've noticed the same. Maybe the garbage filter is getting clogged. 😀

Nope. Been happening for me sporadically for months and months now.

Yes, it's been around for some time. But it seems to have got worse in the last few days.

It's happening again right now. I agree that it's gotten bad over the past few days.

Steve - Are you running something new or interesting?

  • Doing experiments this morning. I've got to update a table to fix data problems introduced by a bad file. So I'm in test and realize that Things Are Getting Complicated. I have a CASE statement with 9 WHEN clauses, 8 of which check 3 columns. One of these columns is a LEFT(mycol,2) check. And I'm thinking to myself, that's gotta kill the processor.

So I build two queries. One is the plain vanilla with the LEFT in each of the WHEN clauses. The other uses a CTE to grab the LEFT and then I do a join to the main table and use the column in the CTE as my WHEN comparison. I run these queries with the Execution Plan and discover...

That I need to stop over-complicating things. Apparently SQL likes the LEFT in each of the WHEN clauses better than me jumping through hoops with a CTE to simplify. Not only is the execution plan cleaner, but the execution time is a second less than the CTE query.

Huh. I guess functions don't always kill a query.

  • Nope. Only when they're on a join or where clause predicate which prevents index usage.

Sounds like you might be better off with some lookup tables, even ones you drop, and doing JOIN's.
