Sometimes one wonders what drives the responds when one points out that the posted solutions are not optimal.

    😎

Maybe he has coded it differently than you guys? Or maybe his hardware does cause it to run slower - that happens.

    I think it's a PICNIC problem;-)

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.

This guy has chained himself to the main mast in calm seas when only a comfortable breeze is blowing, just enough to direct the direction of the cigar smoke. Must say I'm quite tempted to go down to the ER and fetch some really solid comments and quotes but hey! it's Friday:w00t:

Jokes aside, I do share the thought on wasted resources. As an example the most efficient XQuery that shreds a four level deep XML with two parallel branches on the third level has more than 180 operators in the plan tree, 10 times more than it takes to query the equivalent table structure.

    😎

Was a sailor onec myself, should have guessed the Emetophobia;-)

  • The good part about it is that all hardware has had to become bigger, faster, and cheaper to be able to handle even just the tag bloat never mind the act of shredding nor the bloat of employing XML indexes.

I'm stuck in an episode of Dilbert.

ME: Guys, we're having trouble connecting to that server you upgraded.

Them: You need to fill out a TPS 1040A-Z978 form and ask for a password reset. That will reset the passwords across all the servers.

ME: Um, I'm only having trouble with one server and the password worked the week before the upgrade? Can't you help me without the form?

Them: We're the hardware team. You need to email the security team.

    ME: What's the email address?

    Them: FixItFast

OUTLOOK: You do not have permission to email this list.

ME: Expand it and email the individuals, stupid Outlook.

OUTLOOK: Expanding this list is a permanent..

    ME: Yay, email sent.

THEM2: You need to fill out a TPS 1040A-Z978 form and ask for a password reset. That will reset the passwords across all the servers.

ME: Really? Wasn't your change supposed to be transparent to all the end users?

THEM2: We can't help it if you upgraded your servers. You need to fill out the form!

ME: You upgraded YOUR servers. Our servers are still the same.

THEM2: If you changed your user account...

ME: I didn't change anything! It worked the week before you upgraded your server!

    THEM2: ........................................

THEM2: We should schedule a conference call.

This sounds suspiciously like Dilbert (me) returning home from Australia yesterday (at check-in):

ME: I'd like an aisle seat please.

AGENT: Hmm. There's a note against your seat assignment. Let me get the supervisor.

SUPERVISOR: You reserved a window seat for your return flight.

ME: I did? Actually no I didn't. I just flew in in a window seat but want to return in an aisle seat.

SUPERVISOR: I have these people sitting next to each other that I need to seat in a window/aisle seat and you were my last hope to make the switch. One of those seats needs maintenance.

ME: So does that mean I can get my aisle seat?

SUPERVISOR: Yes, we'd be happy to give you that aisle seat.

    ME: Thanks.

    SUPERVISOR (leaves the area)

AGENT (prints boarding pass) Here you go sir. Have a nice flight.

ME: After just speaking with the supervisor for five minutes, why have you assigned me to a window seat? We agreed I'd get the aisle seat.

AGENT: Oh? Let me go check with her (leaves the area).

ME: (waiting another five minutes for her return)

AGENT: Here you go sir! Your boarding pass for the aisle seat. Have a nice flight!

My mantra: No loops! No CURSORs! No RBAR! Hoo-uh![/I]

My thought question: Have you ever been told that your query runs too fast?

    My advice:
INDEXing a poor-performing query is like putting sugar on cat food. Yeah, it probably tastes better but are you sure you want to eat it?
The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.

EDIT: Plus all caps tells SQL we'll get really mad at it if it doesn't go faster. πŸ˜€
