Looks like Luis is answering Oracle questions now.

That wasn't the only attempt on that day. Here's a completely lost Oracle user.

But hey, as long as I can help.

I had to walk away from that last one. I expected that one to go one forever.

Here's another one.... I noticed the USING, instead of WITH for the cte.

    http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic1706970-3077-1.aspx

I'm not sure that's Oracle. AFAIK, Oracle uses WITH just like SQL Server or PostgreSQL. I can't find the RDBMS that uses USING.

Yeah, that particular post was just an isolated snippet of a MERGE statement the OP had asked about in another thread.

LOL. And why should they do the research themselves if they can just come around here and we spoon feed them the answer. They can then turn around and charge 8-10 consulting time for "analysis of changes between the version to ensure the migration goes smoothly". Meanwhile they are sitting on the beach slurping down umbrella drinks while the people who actually know the information are typing in the answer.

    Maybe they meant "connect by"?

There are some nuances in the Oracle CTE, but I don't see USING as being in the syntax. Then again, I am not a power Oracle DBA.

That's one nice thing about working away from home and on site all week. I haven't had enough free time to have had enough of the forums.

Though if my reply there's too snarky, let me know and I'll make it go away.

You did fine and you're absolutely spot on. You've said what we're all thinking. Well, except maybe for me. I've not responded at all because I would not have been nearly as kind as you were. I have a very strong dislike for such JackHoles that rope a client in hook, line, and sinker and then they can't even spell SQL.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.

I admit it wasn't the most polite answer. I feel a lot better about having said it when I see people like Gail and Jason posting something that more or less backs up my comment. 🙂

Jeff, it wouldn't have been as fine if I had said what I was really thinking. 😎
