Just a thought,but don't you love your job when:
a) you observe your systems for a while, then make one small change that improves performance significantly and massively reduces the load on the servers.
2) you reduce the outages/faults by 100%
3) you tune the most expensive queries and the execution time drops from 10+ hours to less than 10 seconds.
as I said, just a thought:-), please share if you have similar experience!

Yes, yes and absolutely yes. My most rewarding one was one that took over 30 hours and I got it down to about 20 minutes. The most impactful one was shaving about 4 seconds off a 4.6 second run. Of course, given that it ran thousands of times per day, the impact was huge.

I find that the job satisfaction when you sit back and admire your work is huge there. Then, after that 5 minutes, on to what's next. 😉

I was just doing some work on our new ERP that we are migrating to and I nearly spit out my drink when I ran across this.

Seriously that table has the "dope poop"!!!!

I worked with a Baan system once (not my choice and it brings back very painful memories) and it had some of the strangest column names - all 4 letters in length. There were ORNO and PONO, but when we found PORN, that pushed some people over the edge. To save everyone the speculation, it was a Char(4).
