And to widen this subject slightly - does anybody have suggestions as to how my wife could occupy herself in Seattle during the daytime? There are some interesting ideas from TripAdvisor and suchlike, but a little local knowledge would be appreciated. If she has a passport, she could always take a ferry to Victoria Island from Seattle. Do some shopping there.
I love Victoria Island. It's beautiful. Of course, I was there in February when there was less to do. October would have more options.
We're actually going there for a few days right after the conference, having intended to so many times but never managed.
Awesome, I'm going to PASS for the first time this year and was going to ask about things to do in and around Seattle. Anyone got any other must do places?
If you have time, Quinault. The rainforest is wonderful. I do a writers retreat every year at the Rain Forest Resort Village[/url]. They've got the world's largest spruce tree and are in the middle of the Olympic National Park. Wonderful place.
Thanks, I'll give it a look

A couple other cool sections of town to visit are the U-District (near the university) also the Capital Hill area is pretty cool. It is a largely gay area with lots of cool shops and restaurants. If you are driving go to see the Fremont troll underneath the bridge. Another cool thing to see is the locks in Ballard. That is a cool place to watch some boats cruise around. Also, if you are driving the naval base is a sight to see. Especially if there is a carrier in the dock. Taking a ferry over the Bainbridge or any of the islands is also a great experience. You don't need to be driving to take the ferry and the ferry docks are very close to Pike Place Market. Ahh I so miss living in Seattle sometimes. 😛

I pretty much spent a day at the Pike Street market last year.Still need to go up the space needle. There is the underground tour http://www.undergroundtour.com/ which I only found out about as I was leaving last year- Grant says it's very cool. I also want to visit the University quarter. The EMP museum was good from what I saw of it last year http://www.empmuseum.org/ it was where the Thursday night party was held.
Rodders...
The Underground tour is amazing. Worth it.
If you want, the Boeing Tour is pretty good. Way N ofSeattle, but they'll bus you up there. The EMP is nice, and there's a Museum of Flight with a Concorde (or they used to have one) and an SR-71 there.
For kids, quite a few museums near the space needle.
A ferry across the water to hang out on one of the islands is a nice afternoon as well.

Rainier - Grove of the Patriarchs is a nice walk, and impressive trees.
St Helens blow down area is also interesting to see the power of nature.
Weyhauser has an exhibit of Bonsai trees, some very old.
I remember a restaurant by the old Coors brewery and watching the salmon swimming up the falls.
Too many things to see in a short visit.
Enjoy!

It's a lot of fun. I had a great time on it. Just a bit of a warning... some rather colorful language is sometimes used. If you're offended by the occasional use of up to and including the "F" word, don't go. And, they warn you of that at the pre-gathering.
If you can handle such a thing, then you'll find the history exposed during the tour absolutely amazing.

Another thing to do in Seattle...of course the NW is known for having lots of microbreweries but what often goes unmentioned is that many of them also make their own rootbeer. Most of the local bars (not the big chain places) carry at least one of the local rootbeers on tap. If those are available at whatever watering hole you are in make sure to try one. The rootbeers around there are amazing!!!
