    So, we are now in mid July, should I start looking at airline and hotel reservations for the Summit?

    Not as concerned about getting a flight to Seattle as I am getting a nice hotel close to the Summit. Ideas for hotels?

    Budget: Red Lion seems to do well, but really anything in downtown Sea is walkable. The Space Needle area is a bit far, but doable, depending on the monorail.

    there's also a good train service running to the airport, so anywhere along that route.

    No Budget: I like the Sheraton (attached to the convention center) or the Homewood, but I get a nice, upgraded room there.

    Just for perspective - Space Needle area is about 20-24 minutes walking. Really not bad for a walk.

    Prices will get a bit cheaper in that area - typically.

    I used to like the Seattle Marriot Maritime when I wasn't paying the tab, it's about 15 mins brisk walk (it's too cold to walk slower than brisk in Seattle in November) from the convention centre and is (or at least used to be) a really nice hotel :-); but now I'm effectively retired I would steer clear of it - even the Sheraton might be beyond my budget after finding the air fare :crying:.

    I don't think I'll make Pass Summit this year anyway, wife needs me to look after her quite often between hopsital visits. It'll be bad enough in Ovtober/November anyway as at that time of year we are 4 hors flight apart most of the time (rest of the year we're together) , and making that 4 hours 12 hours or more even just for a week is not on. There's no direct flight SEA-ACE, and 12 hours probably means running between planes at transit stops instead of long waits so in reality it would be even longer.

    Tom, you aren't in the UK are you? Are you planning a trip over for something else? If you are about on the Saturday it could be worth popping along as there is normally a drop out on the day. I wouldn't be surprised if Chris and the team send out emails asking for people to un-register if they can't make it. So I would say the chances are high you will get bumped... I'll be there from about 2 pm on the Friday, but I'm going to assume that will be too late to let you know anything?

    Yes Rodders, I'm in the UK at this time of year - I try to spend spend May to September in the UK and December to March in Spain (unless we go somewhere for a holiday during those months) and split the other three months between the two according to convenience (Ann likes to be in Spain at Easter, and I want to get back to UK as early as possible in the spring, and between that and trying to split the parts of each year when we aren't in some other country roughly 50-50 between UK and Spain it gets a bit complicated.

    I'm a bit less than 30 miles from Manchester so I can get a train up there on Saturday morning quite easily (Piccadily railway station is a smidgeon less than 10 mins walk from the SQL Saturday location, I think) so any time Friday would be OK unless Ann persuades me to commit to something else for Saturday before then. I'll pm you with my phone numbers so you can contact me Friday if need be to let me know if it's going to be useful to come (assuming I haven't been allocated a space).

    Stayed at the Hotel Max when I was at the 2012 conference. A pleasant enough hotel with helpful staff and a short walk from the conference centre. However it probably had the world's smallest en-suite, which my early-morning brain struggled with.

    This year we're renting an apartment near Pike Place Market. A longer walk, but it means my wife doesn't have to spend several days wandering and looking for things to do while I get fed and entertained. Last time she did an inordinate amount of shopping and the Starbucks card had friction burns.

    And to widen this subject slightly - does anybody have suggestions as to how my wife could occupy herself in Seattle during the daytime? There are some interesting ideas from TripAdvisor and suchlike, but a little local knowledge would be appreciated.

    I pretty much spent a day at the Pike Street market last year.

    Still need to go up the space needle. There is the underground tour http://www.undergroundtour.com/ which I only found out about as I was leaving last year- Grant says it's very cool. I also want to visit the University quarter. The EMP museum was good from what I saw of it last year http://www.empmuseum.org/ it was where the Thursday night party was held.

    Steve - cool, you'll have fun at both. If Steff and Oz do in Cardiff what they did the last time I went, you will drown in coffee - they ordered in especially from Starbucks, funny having to take these huge containers of coffee to the break out area.

    Also for Jason, Brandie and anyone else who like the idea of Relay but can't make it this for what ever reason, especially if you would like to speak - wrong time of year, travel etc, leave your comments and I'll pass them on to the gang running it. They are a good bunch!

    I live in the States. International flights are expensive. If there were a way to subsidize, I'd be all over it. But I'm not going to crowdfund stuff like this, because it just feels wrong.

    Very nice. If only I'd mentioned this a few months ago, when we were booking everything!

    I'm going to keep that one bookmarked for next time, as we're regular visitors to Canada.

    My wife likes to have holidays to look forward to, so we're already organised for this year and all of next year is pencilled in.

    If you have time, Quinault. The rainforest is wonderful. I do a writers retreat every year at the Rain Forest Resort Village[/url]. They've got the world's largest spruce tree and are in the middle of the Olympic National Park. Wonderful place.
