I agree with DavidB, repliers have to own a touch of this.
It's definitely a balance and I still try to hint at people if they haven't shown work. If I think it's test/homework/interview question, I ask them to do some research, maybe point them at an article or something, but get them to do something.
It doesn't work with everyone, but it will encourage some to do a little work. There are plenty of people that will try if you point them in the right direction.

That's part of the reasoning behind the "forum ettiquette" article that so many of us have in our signature. Lot's of times, just taking that minute or two of extra time causes people to have a revelation and solve their own problem. It's also why my first post will, many times, be a link to an article... heh... I've even been blasted for that... "You never post answers, just articles! What good are you?"
And when I do post a solution, I normally detail the steps in the form of embedded comments so the OP can actually have the opportunity to learn something new. After that, it's up to them.
Either way, it's a delicate balance between slaving code for someone and trying to teach them something... or just ignoring them or hitting them with some "tough love" pork chops.

Sure. Well, industry might be a strong term, but there sure are lots of used cart lots, parts dealers, insurance companies, etc. π

Man, I sure hope they survive... I don't believe folks understand what an impact they've had on the United States and North America in general in the last 100 years. I think it would be devastating if even 1 of the 3 remaining (remember "American Motors"?) went under. Of course, Chrysler isn't really owned by anyone in the U.S. anymore... so it might not count. π

They certainly need to evolve. They've been mismanaged for years, counting on cheap oil, big, expensive cars that they want people to buy every few years, a bad model. Not sure what I want to see happen, but I don't want any of them to just disappear.
I would like to see them be able to combine some research into alternative technologies. The Japanese do it, we should be able to.
And they can't remove benefits from retirees. Those were agreed to long ago.

I would say can't. This is something the retirees earned under an agreement with the company. To change teh agreement with current employees would be one thing, but to pull the rug out from under retirees is wrong.

Yeah, sadly there are companies which have started changing the agreements that they once promised to employees. Mainly in the realm of health care promises but still that is a major issue for some of these folks. So, I was sincerely wondering if it was really a "CAN'T" as in they would be breaking the law or is it really an ethical "SHOULDN'T".
Obviously way off topic from the original line of this thread.

Apparently nothing is off topic for this thread.
In regard to retirement, a lot of companies are just taking the lead from the U.S. government which borrows from Social Security, which is OUR money, which means it will be underfunded and many companies have done the same with thier pension plans.
