Okay, so how many looked at the cat and then looked at the books and thought "I have that one, don't have that one....I wonder which titles those ones are"?

    Guilty.

Plus spitting and cursing at all the George RR Martin books. I've grown to really dislike that author.

I took all of my Game of Thrones books down to the second hand bookshop couple weeks ago. I gave up part way through the third and just don't have any inclination to start over.

    Hehehe

I'll post up-to-date photos of both fiction bookshelves when I get home.

I really did some cussing out of him while reading the books. I'd get into a character and suddenly they were dead. What the f....? My wife would hear me and say....so he killed off another one of your favorites? And now it's taking way too long for the next book to come out. I'm thinking about just ignoring the series and just dream of the ending I want.

I'm just watching the TV show. It's better. They have a good editor, which Martin desperately needed. No more books for me. I read through the series to this point, and I hated, I mean HAY TED, the last book. I finished it out of utter spite, just so I could curse with knowledge. Won't read any more, ever.

  • So... at risk of alienating a potential fan base for my own ensemble-cast novel-in-progress.

Why did you hate his books (aside from him killing off favorite characters)?

Was it the "mosaic" novel writing-style or other things?

For me, it was the pointless asides from the main plot. I've no problem with large scope. I have no problem with killing off favorite characters (Podkayne of Mars anyone?) as long as the story is good. It's just the pointless side trips that don't do anything for the main plot. Write those in a second series of off-shoot books or something. Just tell us the bloody story you're going to tell us. All the unnecessary, and lengthy, side-trips into completely inconsequential plots, I wouldn't even call them sub-plots, that provide nothing but padding for page count, cut 'em.

Oh, and a few less descriptions of the meals they're eating. It felt like a travelogue of Westeros sometimes. "Avoid the larks tongue in Winterfell, but eat up at Kings Landing."

There's a lot of empty spaces because of the recent cleanup and trip to the 2nd hand bookshop. Still piles of books in my bedroom which need to be relocated back to the bookshelves

Two things...killing off 'favorite' characters and the length of the delay between books.

For me, he was building up this world/environment where the ruler was killed, a split happened, and fighting was going on to determine the 'rightful' ruler. I 'knew' who he was going to make the final triumphant winner...I just knew it and I really liked the character, rooted for him, etc.....then he got killed off. Okay, now I get into another character....yep...killed off. He really seems to want you to get behind a character and when you are drawn in, he kills him/her off. Who's going to win at the end? The bad guys?

His writing is excellent. I would have re-read the series to refresh my memory when the next book came out...but it has been way too long coming and there's still no end in sight as to when the next book will appear. He's lost my interest.

I know his story is loosely based on the War of the Roses....but still....it's been a heart-ache seeing my favorite characters get killed of. And now, we may never see the end of the series (he's kinda old). I haven't watched the TV version and I've heard it is deviating from the books....the reason I heard is it's catching up to where Martin's books have 'finished' and can't wait for him to complete the series...so they are moving in a direction the producers/writers feel it should go. It may end up being an entirely different story from this point forward.

Harry Potter series is an example of a series done correctly...the books came out quickly enough that the readers were kept captivated. Imagine if the last book took 4 years to come out. I think a lot of readers would have given up on it.

So bottom line....killing off favorite characters irritated me, but it is the length of time between books that has turned me off from the series. If he ever finishes the series, I may go back and read it all then....but until the last book has been written, I'm not going to keep up with it.

I think Martin created a fantastic large world with tons of great characters. I enjoyed reading about the 'evil' characters as much as the ones I was rooting for. I think the deaths were great because you could never feel safe and take it for granted that so and so were going to live. That being said, I gave up reading partly through 'A Storm of Swords' because I felt there was so much filler. If I had to read any more page after page about what people were eating in full granular detail, I might have killed myself. So I left the books behind and just focused on the TV show. Although they do deviate from the source material at times, I do feel they have done a fantastic job with the series.

We're in the last stretch of 1,000 posts before the thread reaches 50,000 posts. What a milestone 😀

I'm doing my best to contribute my chatter to get us there.

Just so you know, I am NOT posting for the sole reason of adding to The Thread's count. No, I am not.

We would have know that without telling, Brandie. 😎 Nor do I, nor any of the rest of us, do that either.

Really. I would never be so silly and nonsensical.

Now If you thought we needed telling that maybe it's something you did need to tell us :hehe:

I won't make a similar denial. I am a great believer in a regular ration of silliness and nonsense. :w00t:

  • Love all the B5 books on your shelves. I've been bad about picking those up. I only have about 4 of them.

The real problem, if you want to call it one, is that while I probably buy somewhere between 2-5 SF books a month, they're all on the Kindle now. I don't recall the last SF paper book I purchased. I still buy plenty of history books on paper (reading maps on a Kindle is a giant PITA, especially as my eyes age). I've got Colonel Mike Snook's fourth book, Beyond The Reach of Empire, in paper. I love the man's work.

Yay! Someone else who thinks they're reading a cookbook instead of a fantasy novel. My wife keeps insisting that I'm exaggerating about the descriptions of the food. I swear, I expected to see pages of recipes after a while. I'll bet that's why the next book is taking so long. He wants to get the seasoning just right.
