    In a different order of ideas, I want to share with you my happiness.

    Starting on April 21st I'll be working in the US. I'll make a stop at Miami on the 20th to continue my trip on Tuesday. I'll spend some time at Detroit and possibly be changing my location after being assigned a project on-site with a client.

    I just can't wait to start my new adventure.

    Brilliant Luis!! Good for you!!

    My Friday fun version:rolleyes:

    IF EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM (VALUES(CAST(1 AS BIT))) d (n)) SELECT 1 FROM sys.all_columns X,sys.columns Y,sys.computed_columns Z

    AWESOME!!!!!!!

    Yes you can certainly get a red circle on them. Eirikur did a great job with those operator percentages as well. It's equally as fun producing a plan that has 19 quintillion rows coming from a 290 row table (with or without xml editing).

    Just like any financial planning exercise:-D (read "Godzilla egg")

    😎

    Luis, Congratulations! Is this a permanent move or a temporary assignment? Also, when do you come to Detroit? I know a couple of people (I'm one of them) who would like to meet you for lunch.

    I'll get to Detroit on April 21st and I'll stay at least one month there. Well, technically, I'll be at Northville, MI. I'd love to meet as many people as I can. 🙂

    By the way, about the article that Gail posted where they mention a comic book cover. I found that discussion out of place.

    Yeah, that protest is stupid.

    The reason that Person B's response to that was discussed (and I do know both the author and Person B) is that the reaction wasn't a specific one of 'that protest is stupid' but rather 'they're ruining *everything* for *everyone*' (paraphrased), another massive, useless generalisation that serves to end any conversation you could possibly have

    Yes, I understood that the point of quoting him wasn't the protest, but the attitude that person takes on subjects he's against or not interested.

    And I thank Brandie for the explanation of the cover being a trigger and should have been handled better.

    Luis, I am so sorry. I realized after someone else responded to you what you really meant and I feel kinda silly over posting the whole "but..." reaction thread. My bad.

    Ed and I are definitely planning a meetup with you and we'll do the relatively short drive to Northville. I'll also find out when the local PASS Chapter meeting that we belong to is (it's usually the 2nd Thursday of the month so probably will happen on May 14th) and send you an invitation. If you can't make the drive yourself, one of us will come get you if you want to attend. We usually go out for 12 oz. curls afterwards which includes some good conversation with fellow database wireheads.

    If anyone else in the area is interested in that night, send me an email through SSC and I'll be sure to send you the PASS Chapter meeting notice when they make it available and, if there are enough people and Luis is both interested and can make it, I'll reserve tables at Shield's (GREAT PIZZA and BEER as well as other good food) and we'll make an evening of it.

    Both Ed and I are very much looking forward to meeting you.

  • Did you guys hear about this awesome new feature in SQL Server called indexed views? It is so awesome that you can create 999 indexes on a view and have faster running queries while at the same time never having to worry about things like disk space (which you would with a table).

    This is so freaking awesome!!!

    Wait, why are we suddenly out of disk space?

    </sarcasm>

    Trying to get developers to understand that an indexed view is not the silver bullet they seek and that better tsql has the same perf benefits (as some of these indexed views they are creating) without the disk cost. sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesh

    They just want to keep creating more and more indexed views. So much so they have already doubled the size of their 1TB+ database in the last month.

    Yeah, and the squirrel is holding something shiny. Let's all look at that. Wait, why did the database double in size while we were looking at the shiny thing? :w00t:

    Everyone wants a magic bullet for everything and they don't accept that everything has a cost. It should all be free, already be done and have no consequences.

    ...

    Edit: This query shows the same thing:

    IF EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM (VALUES(CAST(1 AS BIT))) d (n))

    SELECT * FROM sys.all_columns;

    Which means that it has something to do with the 100% cost calculated for the Constant Scan generated for the IF. The remainder of the query must be getting its costs rated against that.

    Add this to the list of SQL Developer interviewee questions...

    There are some amusing variants - for example try changing the condition:

    😀

    Nice one, Tom - it's the simplest yet and on this server I see 27 million % cost for one of the operators :w00t:

    Color me confused. Tom's code looks the same as Dwain's.

    ???

    Color me butter-fingered! I meant

    IF EXISTS (SELECT 2 FROM (VALUES(CAST(1 AS BIT))) d (n))

    SELECT * FROM sys.all_columns;

    Numbers not quite so big! But look at the actual execution plan (not the estimated one, which doesn't differ from the SELECT 1 case). 95% of the work is in the branch which isn't needed. It's a nice illustration of why (apart from generating spurious run-time errors which can be a nightmare to get rid of) an eager mode of evaluation is unacceptable unless the optimiser takes the trouble to avoid the obvious problems. (I expect Paul will jump on me for that comment - maybe I shouldn't be technical in this thread :hehe:)
