I like watching professional soccer. You rarely see the coaches getting angry on the touchline with the officials (not saying the don't).

You rarely see anything happen in professional soccer.

No one is going to believe this, but a friend of mine & I were very minor characters in one of the Destroyer novels. We were introduced and killed within about three pages, but we were there.

Which one? I read the first 30 or 40

It was one of the one's written in the 80's by the ghost writer Will Murray. I think I have it at home still... 76 or 86 seem to come to mind, but I don't remember.

    ???

There is anybody watching soccer in the US? I didn't suspect this.

  • Heh, funny, this was the quote that greeted me on the top of my gmail account today...

Mike Ditka - "If God had wanted man to play soccer, he wouldn't have given us arms."

Sorry Lynn, I just couldn't resist sharing 😉

Disclaimer: I have no objection to watching or participating in soccer or futbol if you prefer, just found the quote and it's timing humorous.

Interesting read. You'll notice I said that it does happen at times, but what I think is more important is how the UEFA is dealing with it. You don't see that very often with the professional sports organizations in the USA (NFL, NBA, NHL, etc). It's like it is a part of the game when it shouldn't be. After becoming a soccer official, I have gained a much greater respect for officials in all sports. I also realize, however, that sometimes we do make mistakes. We are only human, so I wish more people would except that mistakes will sometimes happen.

So I guess there's some truth to the old chestnut that "Soccer is a gentleman's sport played by ruffians and rugby is a ruffian's sport played by gentlemen."

  • Cricket too its the same. Even if the umpire makes a mistake, you cannot question the umpire. Else you might be banned for the next game or 3.. 🙂

Actually, I don't do the U10 games anymore. Usually doing U12 and up plus High School.

I love watching soccer when i can on TV. My daughter caught a Premiere League game on FSC (Chealsea v Liverpool I believe) and was extremely impressed with the play. Commented on the triangle passes, accuracy of the one touch passes, how everyone played positionally even away from the ball, shifted positions as needed.

When I coach I always tell my players they have homework, watch a soccer match and see how they play. Actually had one player change her play after watching a game with her mom. Improved her level of play, just too bad some of the other players didn't get the same epiphany as she did.

    That's what I call salary negotiations. 😀

  • I like both American football and soccer. I did not like soccer until I had the opportunity to coach it at the Junior High/Middle School level and really learned how it should be played. I have found that many people who don't like soccer don't understand the nuances and intricacies of the game. No offense to any non-soccer lovers out there, I really like all sports, well, except field hockey.
