But how much of the data does an individual DBA need to see? ...Very good points, Tom, and I mostly agree in principle. However in practice, the DBA often needs to determine why data isn't correct, or looks strange, or is slow, and in those cases, they need to get to al the data.
Encryption could prevent them from "seeing" the data, and just get the bits, but that also causes perf issues in that we have to deal with the decryption side of performance and often DBAs have to debug those situations.
Ideally they do this in dev with similar data in scale/skew and it's a developer that does this, but we don't live in an ideal world. We also have far, far too much that that has appeared innocuous in the past, but we've learned is actually PII.
Tough problem. I wish it were more as you say, Tom.
When building data warehouses, it's really difficult to test if you don't have actual data. Either the company invests in a solution that can build accurate test data, or the data warehouse team should be allowed to use actual data.
I had a project once where the data was scrambled and static. We couldn't test incremental loads, so we had to test them in production (hooray). Since the data was scrambled, we ran into unicode issues into production, which weren't present in the test environment.

Anyone going to be at SQL Sat Vienna? It's the Saturday before SQLBits.
Unfortunately no. I would have loved to attend and meet you (at last!).
I'll be speaking at SQL Saturday Pordenone that same Saturday. PASS usually tries to avoid multiple events on the same day when the distance is under 500 miles. This time we had multiple changes in the schedule, so the rule was relaxed. Too bad.

Any Threadizens going to make SQL Rally before SQL Bits. I'll be at both (which means I'll miss Wednesday at Rally).

Hope everyone had a great President's Day. We don't have the snow that Grant does, but we did get 8" or so in Winter Park.I don't know if anyone has the snow that Grant does. Michigan is setting new records for low temperatures lately, but we've been spared the foot after foot of snow that's hit the northeast.
According to my wife, Worcester County where I live has the had more snow than any other county in the lower 48.
Heh... I imagine you take that all in stride. After all, DBAs are use to getting snow jobs. 😀

Sadly no. I did think about doing both, but with the overlap... So still got to tick the Rally box! Maybe next year.
Enjoy Grant and see you Tuesday Night / Wednesday at SQL Bits.

Arh I did wonder if there was such a rule. Did think about Pordenone as one of my ventures into mainland Europe this year but Vienna won that battle!
See you at SQL Bits then!

The party is starting at the TitD. Be careful where you walk, you don't want to step on the single digit midget!

Indeed. I saw both and was trying to decide which to submit to. Picked Vienna because it's on the to-visit list.

Yeah, but now you even start counting different right? 8 days and a wakeup. Short-timer.

In another lifetime, we used to compute a Happiness Factor... basically days on ship / days remaining on ship. I guess for you, it would be days in Afghanistan / days left in Afghanistan... and your HF is becoming pretty large now :w00t:

It sounds like my wife may have to travel to Denver for work soon, probably within the next couple of weeks. I am trying to coordinate it so she can go late or early in the week. Assuming we can find somebody to watch the boys for a couple days I may be out in the Denver area soon to catch some time on the slopes. Any threadizens around the area going to be in town? Would be great to meet up for a beer or two.

You know it's gotta be close we look at it in binary and only need 4 bits.
