You're getting real close, Lynn. You should start a countdown or something. πI was expecting a Nasa-like countdown continuation, for example:
Lynn Pettis (2/16/2015)
... Mark one off, +1 days on the calendar have passed. +1 days on the calendar have passed, +1 days have passed, ...
Yeah, you're really close. Are you mostly packed yet?

Hey Chris,How likely is the chance now of you turning up Thursday at SQL Bits?
Rodders...
I've booked the day off, mate - need 5 minutes to book the thursday at the show. Blimey - half an hour with IBG...
I will be looking to you to say hi on my behalf to those that know me. Alas, this is not my time to attend.
Of course, chap. Anyone specific?
To keep it simple I'll say hello to you Chris and you can say hello to me for Dwain!
Rodders...
So long as you don't need a ginormous fish to set the scene, that's fine by me!

Partly. Shipped on trunk of personal goods a couple of weeks ago. Just need to pack one more that I will have someone here ship when I leave on the 28th.

Currently working out if I want to go out a day earlier on the Thursday.
Rodders...
Yay!
I get in on the Friday morning, leave on the Monday, taking the slow route to London.

SQL In The Wild: Discussions on DB performance with occasional diversions into recoverability

But how much of the data does an individual DBA need to see? ...
Very good points, Tom, and I mostly agree in principle. However in practice, the DBA often needs to determine why data isn't correct, or looks strange, or is slow, and in those cases, they need to get to al the data.
Encryption could prevent them from "seeing" the data, and just get the bits, but that also causes perf issues in that we have to deal with the decryption side of performance and often DBAs have to debug those situations.
Ideally they do this in dev with similar data in scale/skew and it's a developer that does this, but we don't live in an ideal world. We also have far, far too much that that has appeared innocuous in the past, but we've learned is actually PII.
Tough problem. I wish it were more as you say, Tom.

Not I. Since I'll be in Europe until Mar 11, didn't want to extend 3 more days.

Hope everyone had a great President's Day. We don't have the snow that Grant does, but we did get 8" or so in Winter Park.

Just hoping there is nice weather on 3/1 when I come home!

I don't know if anyone has the snow that Grant does. Michigan is setting new records for low temperatures lately, but we've been spared the foot after foot of snow that's hit the northeast.

According to my wife, Worcester County where I live has the had more snow than any other county in the lower 48.

Gee, maybe I should not complain about the five inches (total) we have. π
Actually, Grant, hope you and your family are well and the snow is manageable.

Why all of my SQL-heroes of course! The list would be too long to list here and I'd be afraid I'd miss someone.
Maybe it would just be easier to send a list of people I follow on Twitter (but that too would come up short).
My thought question: Have you ever been told that your query runs too fast?
My advice:
INDEXing a poor-performing query is like putting sugar on cat food. Yeah, it probably tastes better but are you sure you want to eat it?
The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.
