So I finally got my "training materials" for SQL 2012. The High-Performance T-SQL Using Windows Functions by Itzik Ben-Gan (smaller book than I thought it would be) ...
It's small indeed and there is even a chapter you can skip because it talks about window functions functionality that is not included in T-SQL (yet).
But still, one of the best books on T-SQL. The only techical book I have read twice, front to cover.
Need an answer? No, you need a question

Anyone know anything about this Grant guy? Does he know what he's talking about?Nah, I hear he's a giant bag of wind and a bit of a schmuck. However, he dresses nice and can lift 400lbs.
Pfft. I can lift 400 lbs
Just not all at once!
Divide and conquer;-)
😎
But... but.. but...
No. That doesn't count. All at once.
I did the math after working out one day. I picked up a truck... just in pieces.
But it's not the same doggone it!
I don't think I've been able to pick up 400 lbs all at once since college.
Good grief you were a strong brute in college. I am pretty sure the only way I have or ever will lift 400 lbs is with an engine hoist or something along those lines.
Grant can do it now!
In high-school and college I played a lot of sports and lifted to stay in shape.
Since then? Gym on and off, but working on different things, weight loss mostly, staying fit. Not bulking up or working for competition condition.
I still play lots of sports but 400 lbs is more than twice my body weight, not likely I can pick that up at all.
I'm getting old and my legs aren't what they used to be but I find 400 lbs is quite easy to lift. I just set the bar on good sturdy ground, put a jack-lift bag under the bar, and fart-fill it. Works every time and it's not even a strain for me if the lump detector is working correctly 😛

If I lift 200 lbs and weight 240 lbs, does that means I can lift 440 lbs?
I've done 660 lb squats when I was in high school. The only reason I even tried such a thing was because a friend of mine held the school record at 100 reps.
My thought question: Have you ever been told that your query runs too fast?
My advice:
INDEXing a poor-performing query is like putting sugar on cat food. Yeah, it probably tastes better but are you sure you want to eat it?
The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.

And about 5 more 'generating units' have gone offline. And it's still summer, I dread to think what winter's going to be like, current forecasts are we're getting the blackouts until June at least.
So, um, just in case, anyone in Europe got a couch I could crash on if things go really badly?

I have a couch and you're welcome to it, although I'm in Bangkok and that room is not air conditioned. I can promise you though that you won't be cold. 🙂

Some of it is probably the sport you're focusing on. Two of the sports were football and field events (shot put, discus, javelin). It was less than twice mine. And 400 lbs was a deadlift weight. Get it off the ground, stand up straight, put it back down.
Yeah, deadlift. It's not like I have a 400lb snatch or a clean & jerk. I can clean 210. But I only snatch 135. That lift involves so much skill and frankly, I suck.
So you can lift 400lbs, all at once. Is that all?
Unfortunately, yes.
When I spoke to you briefly at SQL thingy in Nottingham last year I wondered why you were called the “Scary DBA”, being so compact and nicely spoken.
That was before I knew you could rip a house off its foundations.

So, Salary.com has an article about job interviews and trick questions[/url]. I think it's fairly interesting. What do you think?Do you agree or disagree that trick questions are fair game?
Crap.
I want someone that is capable and knowledgeable. Then, I want a team fit. And, to a degree, the team fit is actually more important. If someone is at least smart and ready to learn we can teach them the job. But if they don't fit in with the team, how does performing well on knowing how to get cannibals and hunters across the river help me? I'd say it doesn't.
