    I'm curious...

How many folks have a home lab set up with servers?

How many folks just use virtual machines on a computer (be it laptop, etc)?

    Other?

If you feel like it, why did you choose that route?

I for one do everything with VMs on my laptop.

    Everyone say it with me...

    AAAAAZZZZZZUUUUUURRRE!!!

I used to have one using mostly desktop-class machines. It was strictly my play area, so there wasn't a need to spend money on good servers. I had machines for SQL Server, Oracle Database, IIS and Apache. It was a lot of fun and helped me learn a lot, but other things took priority in my life.

No, I didn't see that one. Thanks!

And I know it's not for everyone or for every situation. I just think people have a tendency to be overly dismissive of the technology.

Although, six hours of downtime? That's not horrible. I suspect many of us aren't keeping our servers up that much. This was a very good read. Thanks again.

I think six hours of downtime is pretty acceptable for home labs.

If you have a virtual machine running, I can guess it is down much more than 6 hours in a year.

New laptop, and new labs for me. Toshiba Z30 arrived yesterday, so setup begins today. Then I have to make the switch from Hyper-V back to VMWare (corp decision), so I get to migrate labs and VMs across.

Works for me as I like VMWare and it was a struggle moving to Hyper-V for me.

I started a conversion to hyper-v once upon a time. I put it off because of the time involved to get it all reconfigured to work properly. I haven't tried again since I am happy with my VM environment currently.

Hadn't seen the article or the actual numbers, but had a feeling that might have been the case. I have clients that experienced a lot of unplanned downtime last year. But, I know of a few data centers that are far worse for up time.

I think the six hours is a bit of an understatement. Keep in mind they had one outage near the end of the year that exceeded that (think about the upgrade that failed).

Just VM's on my laptop currently. Don't have the resources (time, money, or electrical) to currently do more in house, though I'd like to. I have a played a little bit to get a setup in Azure since the MSDN license comes with some credits, but there aren't enough of those to use it extensively without setting up refill.

Maybe that's ok for some folks but that would constitute a huge NFW for me and the company I work for.

    Jeff,

I think this question is about home labs versus doing things for work. Azure should be fine for a "home" lab setup.

  • Well this is fun.

Officially, according to the government, South Africa uses the , as the decimal point. In reality, everyone, including the government, uses the .

Windows 7, when used with English (South Africa) had the decimal separator for numbers as .

Windows 8, when used with English (South Africa) has the decimal separator for numbers as ,

SQL Server uses the regional settings of the machine it's installed on. Hence when running on a Windows 8 machine that is set to South African regional settings, SSIS refuses to accept that '34.22' is a valid number.

SQL Server doesn't care, SSIS throws a fit.

It's gonna be a looooog week.

The joys of working with different number formats. So, if they figure it out, would that be extra credit? 😉 I wonder if using BULK INSERT with a format file would allow it through.

Let them do it like everyone does:

import as text, convert in SQL Server.
