While you are at it, pour 45 ml of good Gin over a ripe slice of lime and 3-4 chunky ice cubes, top up with around 100 ml of a quality tonic and wait for an earthquake (shaken not stirred), by the time it's ready the problem will either be gone or forgotten

Okay, I have a question about PASS 2015. I can save a lot of money by registering for PASS 2015 now. My question is when do I make my hotel/flight reservations?

I would have thought the sooner the better or am I misunderstanding the question?

I am just waiting for my end of year check before I register for PASS 2015. Just not sure if I should also make my hotel and airline reservations now or wait until closer to the conference. This will be my first time going to a PASS Conference.

The prices will only go up, better do it as soon as you have the registration done. Trying to fit it into my schedule, cannot tell until the first week of January but if I can make it, I'll be booking the hotel and the flights at the same time.

IIRC, kayak.com keeps trends to check when it is expected to get the lowest fare. For hotel, I'd book as soon as possible.

Might be slightly different with the US domestic flights but for the transatlantic it will only go up. Late October is not a High Season but still it's considered a Shoulder Season, prices are bound to move up, maybe not as fast as the other but still some.
Many agencies and websites recommend 6 months in advance but most booking systems allow for 12, cannot see the reason for not booking straight away.

But still... To my mind, since I'm already fixing one part of the package, why shouldn't I proactively fix the rest of it to make sure the other 6 procs and ETL paths do NOT become a problem down the road?
Or am I just being too efficient?
I'm in your corner, Brandie. In my experience opportunities to pay down technical debt through refactoring can be so difficult to come by (getting approval for them, finding time for them, etc.) that when the window is open you should try to cram as much through as possible. I suppose one consideration might be the scope of the testing required before the changes can be released into production, but if the code is passing all tests why not release it?
When did we all start calling rewriting/reworking code "refactoring"?
I'm using that term here to describe changes to a code base that affect/improve the implementation but do not change the result/output. Per Martin Fowler (http://martinfowler.com/books/refactoring.html) it usually consists of a series of small changes so maybe applying it to large overhaul of a system is bit of a misnomer.
I'm just hearing it all the time now about any code rewrite or mod & I don't remember hearing it before this year.
It's a phrase that's been around for some time, but the meaning has changed a bit. It used to mean "Tidying up code after golive to remove code repetition (DRY - don't have the same code doing the same thing in multiple spots), tidy up ugly hard to maintain code, and the rough edges to te interface which were agreed with the stakeholders in order to give them something functional within a reasonable timescale. Now, it mostly means running about screaming because some idiot who doesn't know what agile means has put a half arsed throwaway prototype into production that can't scale beyond a thousand records and all the data's inconsistent, duplicated and full of complete nonsense.
Which will inevitably be put on the CV (Resume) as ".. successfully rolled out within x days"
I'm a DBA.
I'm not paid to solve problems. I'm paid to prevent them.

I've already booked the flights, because they only get more expensive as time progresses - and I don't have the nerve to wait for standby flights. I haven't got around to booking accomodation yet but that will be done soon. The prices tend not to climb so fast (or at all) but the choices diminish the closer we get to the required date.

You can book a hotel at one of the conference hotels when you register, but, if you are willing/able to walk a bit you can get cheaper accommodations a few blocks away from the convention center. I typically book the hotel when I book the conference because I like staying at the event hotel (Sheraton in Seattle) because of the convenience for dropping off stuff before the evening activities.
For flights, as long as I book at least a month out the prices are about the same for me. JetBlue from Boston to Seattle is usually around $300 round trip.
