what he's tring to do (and you said all firewalls should be able to do) isn't possible with Windows Firewall.
You're claiming Windows Firewall can't block incoming connections other than ones originating from specific IPs? Got a reference showing that such basic functionality is missing?

Hahahaha
One of the managers complained this morning that, as far as he can tell, most of my wardrobe is made up of geeky t-shirts. I'm not sure I see the problem there.
In fact, I need to extend the collection.
Maybe with http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/1c3a/
Or maybe with http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/e718/
I need to find my Crab Nebula shirt for tomorrow.
My vote is for
Or maybe with http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/e718/

I wish e718 had been available when I was younger; but I think http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/f3cd/ would have been even better.I think my sysadmin would love that one.
Talking about sysadmins...
Very cool, Koen. Here's my favorite shirt of all time.
Ed, do you have a link for that shirt? I've got to get one of these.

Yup. That's exactly where I got it. I heard about this query years ago and wanted to have a shirt made. I found out that Think Geek had one, but I've never gotten around to getting one. On the back, I'd want to have "Don't get it?"
Similarly, the "got root?" shirt should have "If you don't get it, you shouldn't get it" on the back. 😀

With windows Firewall it's a three way choice: 1: allow every IP address or 2: allow every IP address on the local subnet and block everything not on the local subnet, or 3: block every IP address. It's in all the documentation about creating firewall exceptions, for example .
This isnt true of Windows Firewall with Advanced Security, which does allow specific addresses - but I read Windows Firewall and assumed that it meant Windows Firewall, not the newer product. Possibly things have changed since I was in the thick of this stuff and people now use "Windows Firewall" to mean teh new product instead of being careful to say which one they mean. The new one is much more powerful than the old one - supports VPNs directly, handles full IPSEC security, and so on - all the stuff I used to do with separate firewall boxes.

Which the OP said he's using (albeit with a incorrect word, he said advanced settings rather than advanced security), and since he confirmed a couple of times that he'd created IP-based rules but they weren't working, I'm pretty sure he actually has.
Maybe I should have said "all firewalls should be able to do, other than those from Windows XP and before"

Had a great SQL in the City yesterday. I now have a lot to read and a lot more to research. Great seeing Jack and Grant again and great meeting Steve. Thanks for an excellent series of presentations on a topic I hadn't considered much before (CI, testing and deployment automation)
Great to meet you Stefan and glad you enjoyed it

I guess what made me think he was using the old firewall was Ville-Pekka Vahteala's post referencing a page about the old firewall, specifically for a rather ancient version of Windows Server (Windows Server 2003). I should have read everything in that thread a bit more carefully - if I had I think I'd have reached the same conclusion as you.
