Apparently PASS passwords (sorry for the alliteration) were compromised[/url].Change your passwords if you haven't already...
ARRRGGGGHHH
Hopefully you didn't change them right away, because there was no SSL or HTTPS (or whatever the difference is) on the profile page. Over the weekend PASS changed this though, so now it is secure to change your password.
And the voting for the board has been extended, so you can still cheer for Grant.
Yeah they were fixing that until 3am Eastern Saturday morning.

and my second vote was a write-in for Steve :ermm:
Go Grant what to whom? 😉
if I had to guess - this is for Grant to be elected @ PASS. As the heading said today - still time to go out there and vote!

Yes, that's what it's about. Grant was the only one running whom I knew and he got my only vote. He's pretty no-nonsense, so if he can bring practicality and common sense to an elected office, that's a win all the way around.
If you're a member of PASS, then don't miss the opportunity to vote.

Any help here would be appreciated. I am going to go get sleep as I have been up all night (work nights here in Afghanistan).
Ha, I saw that post before even seeing it here.

Sooo.. what happens when you design by committee
We just moved into a new office. Promised new, better desks.
Desks are slightly smaller, not much, not a major issue. Partitions between the desks are glass, so no more hanging things from the boards or placing things on top. Not supposed to stick things to them eithe
No where to lock a laptop to (kensington lock)
Power and network sockets into the surface of the desk, right where a screen or laptop would go, with power sockets placed so that the power cables come forward and the network cables up, basically making a large chunk of the center of the desk unusable.
Lots of people unimpressed...

That sounds a lot like a situation my wife is in. She's moving to a new building with smaller desks and glass dividers where she's not allowed to hang anything. There's no feeling of privacy. She doesn't have the power and network on the desktop, though. That would be a huge annoyance. Hey, what if you were to run the cables up the glass and duct tape them in place so you could use the real estate on your desk? 😉

The only power and network sockets are still on the desk itself, not the cables that are the main problems.
I'll take a photo later. Currently there's the top of a printer paper box over the plugs with my monitor on top. Bit higher than I prefer, but that can be remedied with a pair of scissors.
I'm seriously considering printing out a nice EVE screenshot (or similar) in A3, sticking it to thin cardboard and sliding it into the same clips that hold the glass in place. That'll sort the side panel out and I can then stick stuff light-weight to that without breaking any rules.
It seems like every time I've moved office, except for the time when I moved to working from home, it's to smaller desks with less privacy. 🙁

In the Netherlands there's a huge movement towards the "new working". More and more medium/large sized companies redisign the office space. It's all open, no cubicles, no borders between the desks and no privacy except for some meeting rooms. Some spaces only have couches for 'occasional' or 'informal' meetings. You get crazy when one co-worker is talking on the phone in English and another is in a conferencecall in Dutch while you are focusing on a difficult coding issue.
All desks (including computers) are flex-places, so whomever comes in first can take the seat. When you're late all places are occupied and you need to find a spot somewhere. Managements cuts the number of workplaces and expects people to work from home more often. But still management wants everybody in at several days for department meetings, etc. Those days it's more and more difficult to get a spot.
But on the bright side: when you're in early you can get a nice seat where you prefer. Most desks are adjustible in hight, the chairs are comfortable and the offices are bright (lots of daylight).

If working from home was encouraged, I'd do it in an instant. It's not allowed except in exceptional circumstances.
It's odd, in some aspects this company's awesome, flat management structure, minimal red tape, snacks, drinks (incl beer) available, excellent coffee (most of the time), incentive scheme (I get ~R600 worth of vouchers for speaking at a user group). In other aspects it's anything but, average hardware to work on, completely open plan, sardine-style office, expectation that you're at the office when working.
Edit: And I can't really gripe on twitter as the MD, a GM and my immediate boss all follow me there.

They do that because it builds comradery, teamwork and promotes intermingling.

2 things about this:
1. I'd work from home almost exclusively in this case and just be in the office for meetings.
2. I'd be late all the time and not have a desk so I could either work from a meeting room and have some privacy or so I could justify going back home to work after my meeting was over.
My company is the midst of a renovation that will be similar. We'll still have cubicles, but with low partitions about 4ft with a short glass top on top of that. The nice part is that we'll all get powered standing desks so we stand or sit. I'm definitely old school, where I'd love to have an office with a door and then have collaborative spaces for when I need to work with someone. When I'm heads down in code I want music loud sans head phones.

And reduces work, efficiency, concentration and privacy. It goes with not allowing people to work from home, middle managers feel like if you're not there, higher management will realize they have no real purpose.

I've just logged a request with the developers to see if they can have a look and see if we can get the points back. Fingers crossed.Melanie
I am curious if we have any update on this. We still see the negative points.
Thanks;-)
