I think I should be able to make it for the afternoon sessions. The last game should be done a little before noon. Cerner is about 45 minutes away from the soccer field so I think I could make it by the 12:45 session or at least be early for the next one. Registration is full but I am on the waiting list. I will be able to stick around for the social hour at the end for sure.
There are always no-shows, and people leaving early, so come on out. Look me up...

I see people using int for dates in a dimensional modeling area. Makes some sense, and then you wouldn't have the lovely "my date doesn't fit in 7 char" issue.

Date columns as a varchar(7). What are you even putting in there? Still better than the date columns as Timestamp I guess.Well, months have no more than 31 days, we have 10 numeric digits and 26 letters, so more than enough space.
So today is A092014
You must be using a different calendar down:hehe: there, up here today is 133536E

And Oklahoma Joe's (soon to be renamed as Joe's Kansas City) is the best in town in my opinion which is what they are having brought in for lunch.
I have found somebody to cover coaching duties for me. Now I just need to figure out how to get my son to his game and find a place for him to spend a couple hours after before my wife gets back from our other son's game. As of now it is looking promising I may be able to be there for the whole day instead of just the afternoon. I will definitely find both of you.
Anybody else coming to our fine city this weekend?

I am wondering if there is any place worth giving a try in Seattle for BBQ. I might have to look that up. Maybe skip some sessions to get some good food.

There is definitely good food but not so much BBQ. I lived there for 6 years and good BBQ was one of the things I missed the most. I still know a ton of people around there. I will ask and see if anybody knows of a good BBQ place there. Fortunately you will be in an area where there is lots of good food around.

That's something I'm always in the mood for - BBQ. It's always good to have a recommendation for a good one, so thanks. If I ever get over to your city, I'll check it out. Of course, we'll make time for gaming. π
There aren't really many good options for BBQ here in Metro Detroit. Unless you count my smoker, but that also involves work and a lot of time.

I find time to fire up my smoker at least a couple times a month. I find that in addition to work and time it requires LOTS of beer.

There was a story in the paper here yesterday about a guy who traveled here really wanted to have some Oklahoma Joe's. Instead of taking his food on the plane he wrapped up his food and put it in his luggage. Apparently the TSA removed it from his luggage. How ridiculous that you can't pack something in your bag that you can carry on. Poor guy literally had BBQ heaven in his hands and let it slip away.

Date columns as a varchar(7). What are you even putting in there? Still better than the date columns as Timestamp I guess.
It's probably the ISO-8061 presentation format for a month: YYYY-MM is 7 characters. Varchar because they might want to designate a year (YYYY). That's one of the rare occassions where Celko prefers to contravene the standard - he insists on char(9) (YYYY-MM-00 for a month, so presumably YYYY-00-00 for a year as it's char not varchar).
Personally, I character strings are not how I want to represent dates internally, I prefer the T-SQL date type; and things like month and year can be represented by their beginnings if we know their lengths, and if we don't they need an interval type (perhaps not the ISO standard SQL one, I can't remember what that actually is but I have a suspicion that it isn't an interval at all but what most people call a duration) which in T-SQL can't be represented atomically (simple representation is a datetime2 or a date for the begining plus some sort of integer for the duration in whatever units are needed).

Maybe, but for "Date Entered"? Seems a little vague.
I thought Celko hated storing presentation in the database.
