Ed and Jason,Some serious rain there. Glad to hear you are all OK.
Rodders...
Thanks for all the well wishes, everyone. Things are starting to dry out around here; there's only one freeway that's still closed due to about 13 feet of water. :w00t: I heard that Long Island, NY is being hit by the same system today.
Well, now that the roads are open and we've dried out a big, the next storm is now hitting us.
1. We got record rainfall Monday and a followup on Tuesday. Roads closed (14 feet was the maximum I heard) and basements flooded all over the Detroit metro area. People actually helped each other.
2. As soon as the water on the roads was shallow enough, the tow trucks cleared the roads. Starting Wednesday, the local news was reporting that the impound lots were charging motorists extra-high fees to get the water-soaked cars out of the impound lots. Let the gouging begin.
3. Now the scams have started. The "I can fix your home, but I need money up-front only to never be seen again" crowd has already started to hit the flood victims. We hear about this type of activity too much here, but with a natural disaster like this, it'll be more than usual. The news will swarm all over it for a few days, nothing will be done to stop it, then we won't hear much about it any more.
This people of this city hurt themselves more than the natural disaster.
People also need to watch out for flooded cars which will be for sale in a couple weeks or later, as I have read those cars are repaired "only to be sold", and naive customers won't find out the car really needs bigger and more expensive repairs, specifically upholstery and interiors.

We expect some behavior like that. But behavior like that on a large scale by many people in society in a single community is bothersome.

Wish I could remember what last year was like, I remember some nice days for '77 as I have a picture of me from a company picnic. 🙂
Good lord, I'm surrounded by fogies! I was 1 years old for most of '77.
Mean old fogies. Never forget that.
I was 14 in 77.
I was -7 :hehe:
Ha! I didn't know we had the same age 😀
Luckily we are here to take the age average down in this thread 😎 :hehe:

b) block that spammer (mominbd) and all its variations using a filterMaybe a throttle on posting new threads. A human can't post multiple threads in a very short time, the bots can (this mornings were around a minute apart)
1 minute between 1st and 2nd threads, 2 minutes between 2nd and 3rd, etc. Like with increasing delays for failed logins (which is recommended a security idea), it's unlikely to bother real users (other than the ones cross posting their stuff everywhere).
+1 seems effective.
I have sent some of these ideas to our developers. Fingers are crossed they'll do something.
You let your developers decide what needs doing? That's the scariest thought I've seen today.
Of course, the day is young.
My thought question: Have you ever been told that your query runs too fast?
My advice:
INDEXing a poor-performing query is like putting sugar on cat food. Yeah, it probably tastes better but are you sure you want to eat it?
The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.

Help! I was asked by my DBA to optimize the following query because it has a high cost.
DELETE MySchema.Facttable
WHERE datecol = @Date;
It's part of a stored procedure and hasn't been implemented so we don't have performance problems so far, it just has a high cost.
And that is just part of everything that makes me want to facepalm. I just love when the dbas ask everyone to optimize their queries without giving a hint on how to do it (other than using nolock hints everywhere).

Why not suggest to partition the table on the datecol:-P

I really need to finish editing the article on premature optimisation...

It appeared to me that the OP only gave part of the picture.
I check data before submitting for an insert.
Sound advice was given, although they didn't see the real intent.
So in a roundabout way, they could be asking the wrong question.
