It came to prominence in the UK thanks to this show;

Cheers,
Rodders...
You are, of course, in danger of being called Dave π
Bex
Not really, because as we all know..."No man, Dave's not here". π
Really? Why?
Dave? What the UK based satellite station?
Dave Lister?
HAL and Dave?
Nah, you've lost me there...
Rodders...
It is part of a comedy routine about stoned people from the 60s or 70s by Cheech & Chong.
I'm glad I'm not the only who remembers that bit of comedy from the 70s. Maybe with the Random word currently being about Monty Python, it has me thinking of that era. π They don't make stuff like that any more.
No I looked up the Cheech and Chong routine, remember them, not the song.
Just no idea why you would want to call me Dave. That one has always alluded me.

Trigger, in "Only Fools and Horses", never got Rodney's name right--he always called him Dave. I suspect that's the joke here.

And part of the confusion is likely the references layered atop one another. : -)

It's a curious coincidence that I stumbled upon the 2010 Denzel Washington/Chris Pine movie Unstoppable on TV last night. A bit of a spoiler here - the stars play a train crew trying to chase down a runaway train, couple their locomotive to the rear of the runaway, and drag it to a stop before it derails and spills its hazardous cargo in a highly populated area.
I was watching TV because I was feeling anxious about a project at work and couldn't sleep after a long workday plugging away at it. I was added to the team somewhat late in the process and at first, the project seemed fairly straightforward. I soon discovered that there was much more to it than anyone had anticipated and there was no plan to addresses the significant obstacles. At that point, it started to feel like the "Triple 7" in the movie - a runaway train barreling down the track at full throttle. Thankfully, this morning, a DBA colleague and I finally caught up to it and brought it to a screeching, grinding halt before it left the rails. I need a nap.

What's alluding me is Dave claiming to not understand why people call him Dave whilst also providing a link to an Only Fools page.

Ha ha...
You can know where something comes from without watching it, you know π
But yes I was feigning knowledge of this "Dave" of which you speak.
I am now legally obligated to say the following:
"I have never had that said before, and you are, of course, the first." π
Once had someone say it to me at a new place of work, I looked at the chap, very straight faced and said "why would you call me Dave?", etc. Managed to keep in going for a few minutes. He looked very nervous and confused for a while.
Cheers,
Rodders...
