Are the posted questions getting worse?

Argh!!! Why do some people around here consider me to be their own private consultant. They send me a PM with a vague description of something and ask me to help them figure it out. I don't want to ignore them but I am certainly not going to help them when they use that method. Sad that the latest one has over 500 points and still can't seem to get it that they need to post details. I left my crystal ball in my other pants.

    /RANT OFF

I will usually reply to them asking them to post it in a forum thread if they want it answered.

That is what I did, along with a reminder about giving enough details so we have a chance.

+1 and I include that having it in a public forum thread gives others the chance to provide a better answer and/or to learn from the problem.

I should have said "if they want a better chance of having it answered."

In the end, if several people can see it, the more likely you are of getting a) an answer and b) a correct answer.

Gotta love a review system where an above-average rating requires "Leaves only when work is done and stays to assist others"

"No pressure to work overtime" they say. :ermm:

Gotta love a review system where your managers attitude was "I never give out above-average / exceeded expectations" at review time...

And raises were in part (of course) based off review scores...

ugh - I've had a few of those.

I've even had mgrs that refused to give out meets expectations. So everybody on the team was always a hair under "meets expectations". That is until there were complaints and so she had to start giving out an occasional "meets".

One year, there were three of us putting in 90 hr weeks on a project to save the company 50k/month. We succeeded in that project but all three of us were rated below "meets expectations." We were baffled at that point as to what the expectations were.

After those reviews, of a team of 15, less than half stayed.

My boss at my previous company gave me a great review my first year. He basically said I walked on water. Then, every year after that, it was "Meets Expectations" because it's kind of hard to top walking on water. He was an evil genius.

I also had a raving review once. When I asked for a raise: "ah, we're not giving raises this year. K thx bye". A year effort for "nothing". Charming... 🙂

Another year: "Yeah you have very great results, but you had a raise last year and this year we need to give it to someone else." Conclusion: if you had a good year once, the next ones don't count anymore.

I have been receiving more and more PM's lately.

Last one I received one about setting up a cluster (for the 70-462 lab exercises).

I'm probably the last person on the world you'd want advice from on that topic.

(he even wanted to pay me. The poor guy, he must be desperate)

When I get those (weekly sometimes), they get my standard reply.

Please post your question in the forums, I don't answer questions via PM

And that is all they will get there.

Hehehehe. Kinda like asking me to set up an SSAS tabular model.

Last person I had here who offered to pay me was offering $100 per month for unspecified assistance. Um, let me think, no

I very nicely push these people to the forums. I'll answer questions, but it's always going to be very short answers. If they want details, go to the forums, or pay me.

Yeah, one guy offered to pay me, so I sent him my rate. And that was the end of that.

Heh, I don't mark up when someone tags me like that, I just give them whatever rate I'm working for as a contractor currently... and everyone runs. Quickly.

I can only imagine what you guys should/would charge. :hehe:

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see how people who are already getting free help on this forum think it's acceptable to harass people via PM and expect entire applications to be written for them.

    Indeed 🙂

I usually reply something like: "My rate is x per hour with a minimum of 4 hours worked. I accept Paypal." 😀

  • So for my current gig, I'm not a production DBA.

We have a very temperamental server which is being upgraded this week.

It also has spaghetti jobs / packages. You know A must run for B & C to run, and C must run for D to run, etc...

And no, there is no job decency / logic in the packages... A should finish by X, so B can run at X + 10 (or whatever).

Got an email this morning to say that job D produced no results. I had a look and it's because C ran and produced no results.

The server was rebooted over night, there is a lot of over night jobs that run, or rather didn't last night...

Not really sure we should be finding out because a business user emails with "why are the files empty?"

Yes the DBA's don't try and run any of the jobs that were either running at the time of re-boot or should have started while it was down.

I should point out that in my 18 months here this is the 3rd set of Prod DBA's, and they are swamped, but still lack a certain proactive response, shall we say?

    I'll say no more! :ermm:

    Rodders...
