Just thinking of Grant singing is scary!;-)

    Yeah it is

I still have nightmares about the duet between Grant and Jason Straite from Chicago...

I think some were put on youtube - I too scared to search while at work just in case it's NSFW

    Rodders...

  • So, for anyone who uses TrueCrypt personally or professionally:

Ars Technica: "TrueCrypt is not secure"[/url]

Reading comments elsewhere (Theregister.co.uk) one commenter suggested that rather than this being a plot by the NSA to force people to something they have "backdoor" keys to (Bitlocker,) instead the ongoing 3rd party audit of Truecrypt found a gaping hole in it's security, told the Dev team, who then decided to shut down the project...

I never used it, but one of my co-workers does (until he finds a replacement now that isn't Bitlocker,) but none-the-less an interesting story...

Should be interesting to see how this plays out...

I don't think Grant is scary, but I have not heard him sing or seen him wearing a kilt. Before someone posts something, I don't have a need to experience either one.

Interesting. I have a client that employs both of those. Can't remember which direction they were migrating on it.

Previous client was moving everything to Bitlocker.

  • So, anyone hear about the unveiling of the SpaceX Dragon V2 capsule last night? It's their first man-rated capsule, and they're planning to have their first manned launch in 2016 with it.

NASA is apparently already planning to start using SpaceX for ferry flights of personnel to and from the ISS with it.

And to think, if they hadn't chosen to go in a different direction, I might've been a DBA for them...

    ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Took a look last night, and they're not currently looking for DBAs...

    :crying:

  • Yes, VERY excited about that! Can't wait for mankind's first spaceport to open, although I sure as heck can't afford a ticket. I'm sure NASA already has a contract drawn up and waiting to be signed, since they have one already for cargo to ISS, just makes sense. Best part, they're not the only company working on reusable crewed spacecraft, just the first.

    Yay, Space!

  • I'm still hoping the system that uses helicopter rotors becomes a viable system. I didn't see the demo; I'll probably watch it tonight.

The system I'm really excited about is the one Jordan Kare was working on (he may still be) that uses lasers to launch a capsule. The lasers activate ablative material on the outside of the capsule to create thrust. The lasers all stay on the ground. There's something like 500 of them all operating at once.

  • The impression I've gotten is that they already have a contract with NASA to ferry crew, it's just been waiting for the man-rated capsule to be completed and certified.

Dang, I would *love* to either catch a ride on Virgin Galactic SpaceShip 2, a Dragon v2, or even the Vomit Comet...

One of those three might actually be in my price range...

Of course, if I don't mind going a bit more old-school, I can easily afford one of these rides:

You don't need any sort of ablative material for something like that to work, at least not in the atmosphere--you can use the heat of the lasers to turn the air around the craft into a plasma that provides the thrust. The "Lightcraft" works on that principle.

But once you get out of the atmosphere, you do need it.

Is it cheaper if you ride as tailgunner?

Got to tour one of these on the ground once, and a German one (can't remember which now, too long ago, think it was one of the the Junkers models, perhaps the 188). After all the documentaries and knowing the impact they had, seeing them in person was a shock. They're small!!! I can't imagine what it would be like to be airborne with a crew.

And OMG, the walkway from the cockpit/radio room through the bomb bay to the gunner's stations in the rear of the fuselage! It makes me quake in my shoes to think about crewmen crawling out there while airborne with the bomb bay doors open to free stuck release mechanisms, etc.

After seeing (and hearing) a B-17 and a B-24 make several low fly-bys over the downtown skyline for photos a few years ago, I can only imagine the deafening thunder of *hundreds* of those things passing overhead.

While it would be cool, I'd hate to be nearby if a sortie of this nature were coming. Ok for the adrenaline rush and peacetime type of flyover - but would hate to be near the target of that group if on an actual run.
