Hope the op and recovery go well. You gotta make it over for SQL Bits.

Finally making some progress on at article on premature optimisation. Anyone willing to be a proof-reader? Hopefully will be done this week or next.

Pretty sure I can make the time out here to proof an article.

I am assuming this means a hug from Ms. Shaw and the chance to share a meal or drink?

Only choice is whether to fly to Birmingham or Heathrow...

I saw you were on the submitted list today.

Train goes straightish from Birmingham airport to Telford. Via Brum central, so you might have to change train, but I think they just sit at Birmingham for a few minutes longer than normal.

I'll be driving by at some point on the Wednesday, so could pick a few people up from the airport, if the flights tie in.

If I'm still at the same contract them Heathrow isn't that far either, come to think of it!

    Definitely!

Not sure when I'll be flying in, have to see what I can get out of my company first (they're happy to pay for flights but are baulking at counting the conference as working days. 🙁 )

Hmmm... Will have to see whether it'll be better to fly JHB - Heathrow - Birmingham or fly JHB - Heathrow and take the train up to Birmingham.

Since company will pay for flights but not other transport costs, probably the former.

  • I'm likely going to Cambridge for a couple days, so for me it would be either Birminham/Heathrow -> Cambridge, and then to Telford. The return is likely the more critical for me. I need to figure out Sun returns from both and then decide. Figure easier to get to Birmingham from Telford Sat night.

  • Damn it.. I miss the hugs from Miss Shaw. 🙂

I avoid Heathrow whenever possible - it's a pretty unpleasant airport.

  • I just posted an issue with a VB Script Task (SSIS) and would appreciate the thoughts of anyone with experience.

My in-house Dev is telling me I can't do this in SSIS and need to have a web service built, which is rather annoying me. He knows as much about SSIS as I know about programming and informed me that just because SSIS uses Visual Studio as the framework for its design doesn't mean that SSIS can do all the things that a properly programmed web service can do. He's being really nice about the comment, but it just makes me want to prove him wrong.

Especially since I'm going to have to be the one to support any resulting problems and I don't know boo about web services. :w00t:

Anyway, free internet cookies are available in the Tent in the Desert and the Hippo is off duty, so feel free to stop by. @=)

    Tom,

Interesting, I don't have a huge amount of experience with flying abroad, so bearing that in mind... Can't say I'd had any real problems with Heathrow, other than it's just bigger than the other "London" airports and Birmingham, so take longer to get to gates etc. But I do know of a couple of the American speakers who avoid it when ever they can due to the security there and non UK citizens.

But certainly for SQL Bits in Telford, Birmingham (or more accurately Solihull International Airport - you can tell where I lived when I lived in the West Midlands 😀 ) will be a lot easier, depending on if flights go there and the cost difference with London / LHR

  • Well, I put in for another 6 months out here in Afghanistan. Looks like I'll miss another PASS Conference. I did put in for 2 weeks over Christmas as I really want to be home for the holidays this year.
