Yeah, that's going to be a bit tough because of the lost time (90 minutes travel a day) and the loss of flexibility, but, there aren't as many FT telecommute jobs out there as there could be. The CIO at this company did say he is working on changing the culture to allow more remote work so there is some hope that there will be some change moving forward. This is a good company that has a track record of retaining employees because they treat you well. They value training as well.
Is that 90 minutes up and 90 minutes in return? Ouch.
Important though they value training.
No just 90 minutes total, and that's probably actually longer than it'll actual take most days. It's only about 18 miles each way, and most days will only take 30 minutes each way, but any traffic or weather issues could up to double it. It's about as long as I want to travel. If it was 90 minutes each way I'd have negotiated at least 3 days a week telecommute.
To answer Jason's question. I'm in the process of accepting the first one because the 2nd one hasn't gotten back to me yet and I think the 1st one is the better job career wise. I called and left a message this morning saying I was accepting the offer. The HR person was not at her desk when I called. Probably in a meeting. I'm going to call again.

That's about what my commute is now, though it's closer to 16km and 21 sets of traffic lights in 45 minutes.
I started out listening to Pluralsight courses in the car. Can't get full value without watching them, but get enough from the audio to make it worth while. That was getting annoying (the lights and traffic, not the courses), so had a chat with boss and negotiated a mixed work-from-home/work-from-office setup. I can work from home for an hour to an hour and a half in the mornings, then drive into the office. That drops the travel time to ~15 minutes to work.

I'd say that is a significant improvement.
I wonder what that would look like in an execution plan (the before and after queries err commutes).

Good Monday everyone,
I've been away for a week and seems a lot to me. I moved to a different area in my company and I've been adapting and learning (and struggling with the lack of internet access).
Congratulations to Jack on his new job.
If you want to talk about traffic, It takes me about an hour to get to work when it should take me about 20min. That's the price of living in one of the most populated cities in the world.

I'll probably listen to some PluralSight stuff on the commute as well. At some point I'll start working on negotiating some telecommute time, but because of the job, I'll probably have to be in the office most of the time because I think there will be quite a few meetings with the position. My job title is Data Software Development Leader. I'll be doing a lot of design and architecture work. I'm going to kind of span the MS Data Platform by being an advisor to the DBA, doing T-SQL Development, and BI work (SSIS, SSRS). I'll have the opportunity to learn a lot more about data warehousing, SSAS, and the new BI tools (Power View, etc...) as this is the direction they are moving.

Technical Lead: SQL Server. Technically means I'm in charge of the direction, design and architecture of any SQL Server portion of any application we develop. Practically means not very much. But I can't work entirely from home as I have to be around for all the 'how do I write a delete query' type questions.

I think the execution plan probably looks the same, but there just isn't as much other traffic to consume the limited resources (the road) available. It is interesting that no matter where you are in the world the same problems hit everyone during rush hour. I haven't seen a city yet that can stand up to the onslaught of rush hour.

I think that it would be similar but without some high cost operators. Each red light could be one of the cursor operators - but only during rush hour 😉

Congratulations on your new spot, Luis, if congratulations are in order. I'm sorry to hear about the lack of internet; that makes life much harder sometimes. On you traffic comment, I hear your pain. Before I moved, my commute took about 18 minutes during non-peak times. During rush hour, it would take about 75 minutes one way. Moving was such a relief. You don't realize how much time you waste sitting in traffic until you measure it. You then realize how big of an impact it has on your life once you get it back.

I'd call that one of those infinite nested loops operations.
At least it looked like nobody got dumped into the pit when it decided to collapse.

So for those of you who knew I was unemployed. I have an offer on the table. The only problem is that it involves going back to "real" work with hard deadlines, accountability, and going into an office. None of those are bad things, but it's just been a couple years since I've had all 3. The last job was a full-time telecommute and they thought they had hard deadlines and accountability, but it not really, and prior to that working for a non-profit where they were happy you there.I haven't accepted yet because another company is also interested in making an offer and I'm giving them a chance to see what they can come up with. The current offer is good and the benefits the come with the current offer are top shelf, so it'll be very hard to top.
Congrats.
As far telecommuting or traveling into an office. I find that a combination is really good. If the company is willing to work with you on being in the office full time, maybe you can get a two-day-a-week telecommuting deal. It drives me nuts to be a full time telecommuter. I need the social aspect of an office at least once a week. My ideal is two days in the office and three telecommuting.
Good luck.

It's basically the same position but within a different area (I'll have to clean the mess all over again). My former teammates reminded me of configuring the proxy and I'm back online.:-D
