Pfff, than you have never been in Belgium before 😀
If we wouldn't be having the most traffic jam congested cities in the world, you could drive through the whole country in a couple of hours.
You can drive through the whole country in a couple of hours. I've done it (by avoiding cities). Germany to France.
I meant from west to east. You'd have to pass either Antwerp or Brussels. Either way, you're screwed 🙂
And you can go from Germany to France without passing Belgium as well 🙂
Brussels must have changed a lot since I was last there - the traffic wasn't to bad then, compared to other cities I knew, but that was about 15 or maybe 16 years ago. Antwerp I drove through the outskirts of on my way from France to the Netherlands and again on my way back in (I think) 2005 - it wasn't a problem at all then, nothing like the mess around Utrecht - but even that is long enough ago for there to be plenty of change since.
The road infrastructure is about the same since your visit, the number of cars however 🙂
Belgian traffic is probably not as chaotic as in other cities, it is just congested.

Your "It depends" is something I agree with, but I disagree with the rest. It doesn't match my experience, not at all.
I would say your experience is not average. Given that the RAC quote the UK average annual mileage at 8200 miles, that comes out at 157 miles per week. That would be significantly less if you include occasional visits to the inlaws or other family members in different parts of the country. Lets call it 130 miles per week and assume that would be made up of several small journeys and a 40 minute drive to Ikea 🙂

Telford being fairly central is advantageous.
Fairly central? :w00t:: In Britain excluding Northern Ireland? That's hopelessly inaccurate :exclamation: In fact it's crazy. Even if you mean the British mainland, thus excluding the Orkneys and the Shetlands as well as Northern Ireland, the latitude of Telford is further from the midline between the nothernmost and southernmost latitudes of the mainland than is the latitude of Glasgow, which itself is of course nowhere near central - the central latitude is a shade north of Kendal, and that's far too big an error in an an island as small as mainland Britain to allow Telford to be classed as "fairly central". Of course if you meant "fairly central in mainland UK excluding Scotland" then that's a fairly accurate description of where Telford is - the lattitude halfway between the extreme south and the extreme north of England passes only about 17 miles south of Telford. Is calling Telford "fairly central" perhaps a product of the common SE English view that hardly any of the British mainland is north of Watford Gap?
Of course I didnt include NI (I come from the West Midlands and now live in ROI so I didn't forget it), it was just a generalization as most visitors to mainland UK wouldn't even consider driving up to the Orkneys or getting a ferry to NI. As I think I quoted myself as measuring the distance between Great Yarmouth and Holyhead as being on an approximate level with good main road connections and being at what appears to be the widest point to the naked eye. I could have chosen Aberystwyth but I don't like driving on the welsh roads because of the caravans.
My interpretation of central is mainly down to the fact that west is Wales and Ireland, North is Scotland etc. A few hours in either direction there is plenty to see. I never claimed any degree of geographical accuracy just that its fairly well connected to go anywhere and that there are lots of places to visit nearby.
For what its worth, I've never lived south of the Watford gap and so have no opinion. Having lived in Birmingham, Mansfield, Nottingham, Stoke-on-Trent, Malta, Innsbruck and currently Dublin I've managed to avoid it except on Business trips. 😛

Traffic? Puh-lease! Try driving in Bangkok on Friday at 6PM.
Bangkok? No thanks, Dwain. You win. We have some terrible roads here and heavy traffic, but from what I understand, Bangkok and Beijing are among the worst in the world. I think I'll stay home. I would enjoy the food in Bangkok, but not getting it it. 😉

Anyone?

I have a nasty feeling that it's blocked waiting for the alter database to go through (without a WITH ROLLBACK clause, that will wait forever iirc) because of an existing connection to the DB in question.

I was on my motorbike and it was a Sunday :-).
I did Innsbruck to Dover in 14 hours that day.
I've driven 1/2 way across the US a couple of times. It's always taken about 2 days, stopping for maybe 4 hours for a little sleep. I'd call it about 36 hours give or take from Tulsa to New London, CT. That's driving.
Tulsa to New London on four hours of sleep? No wonder they call you the Scary DBA

So for those of you who knew I was unemployed. I have an offer on the table. The only problem is that it involves going back to "real" work with hard deadlines, accountability, and going into an office. None of those are bad things, but it's just been a couple years since I've had all 3. The last job was a full-time telecommute and they thought they had hard deadlines and accountability, but it not really, and prior to that working for a non-profit where they were happy you there.
I haven't accepted yet because another company is also interested in making an offer and I'm giving them a chance to see what they can come up with. The current offer is good and the benefits the come with the current offer are top shelf, so it'll be very hard to top.

I'm not sure I could go back into an office full time though.

From what I've heard traffic is much improved over the days before they put in the Skytrain. Now there's a subway too. Traffic still sucks if you go to the wrong place at the wrong time though.
My thought question: Have you ever been told that your query runs too fast?
My advice:
INDEXing a poor-performing query is like putting sugar on cat food. Yeah, it probably tastes better but are you sure you want to eat it?
The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.
