Lichfield & its cathedral are about 30 minutes eastwards.
However it might be better to go westwards: Shrewsbury is much closer than Lichfield, it has Shrewsbury Castle and the Abbey Church (two examples of medieval architecture) and also Shrewsbury Cathedral (built in the 1850s), plus a whole pile of historic buildings including some fairly early ones, and it's the right direction for Wales as well. Heading North from Shrewsbury it is not far to Chirk, with another interesting castle. NE Wales has several castles, but they are all total ruins so not very interesting from an architecture viewpoint (Wales probably has more medieval castles than any other chunk of land the same size anywhere in the world; unfortunately most are ruins), but heading NW from Chirk it's not too far to Conwy, in North Wales, where the medieval town wall is still fairly complete and the castle, although somewhat dilapidated, is in far better condition that anything in NE Wales. Going west along the north coast of Wales you would find Beaumaris, with a 14th century Church and another somewhat dilapidated medieval castle (said to have been the strongest medieval castle in Britain) , and the next interesting point is Caernarfon where the medieval castle is very well preserved - well enough to be used for the investiture of both Princes of Wales in the 20th century (Edward in 1911, Charles in 1969). There's plenty more to see in Wales, of course. St David's is worth a visit, as is Pembroke, and many other places.

Tom,
Shrewsbury - somewhere else that's on my "yet to visit" list. I'm getting almost as much out of this discussion as Gail is.
Deciding whether to wait for the discount codes on the three hotels - all of which seem rather expensive at normal rates or hunt around for a nice cosy B&B.

Shrewsbury (not Shrowsbury as the BBC insist on calling it) has many gorgeous timber-frame buildings and one or two very special churches for the stained glass admirer. Now it has a Loch Fyne restaurant, it's worth an overnight stay too.

I come from the West Midlands and I've been to Shrewsbury loads of times as I have/had several relatives who lived there and nearby. A little further west is Welshpool and Powis Castle to take in a little more old architecture.

I really didn't use my time in the West Midlands well did I? So many places I should have visited, almost on my doorstep. But then I had a friend in Coventry who had never been to the Bullring! Although she's not really a shopper, it's worth it to see the two bulls, the real statue and the Jelly Belly one in Selfridges π
I did live outside the cross that supposedly marked the centre of England, and shopped at the Heart of England Co-op. Only it wasn't they re-worked out the centre and it was a few miles north - oh well. Nearer Fillongley, I believe. That name always makes me laugh.

Sorry, Jason. Sadly it's been down for years (ever since I was sick). Almost of of my scripts should be on SqlServerCentral somewhere though (the good ones anyway). If you still want it let me know which one and I'll see if I can locate it.

OK. The kids have finally moved out and are on their own. We think it may stick this time. The wife and I are busy selling the house so we can move into a smaller place. Business is good for now, but nothing much new.

I can't remember which script it was - it was in response to a thread you had answered here on SSC, but the script you provided was linked to your site. Somebody was having problems with it and I was gonna try to help.
You might have an email somewhere if you are still subscribed to that thread. It will take me some time to dig which one it was about.
