Also SQLbits "Is very close" to being announced. Apparently some last minute hitches - all very Prophet Zarquon! Again no idea what that really means though. Simon was just smiling in that slightly mad way Simon smiles at you.

Excellent. My team lead's been asking about that every week.

    Gail & Grant,

Got an email today from a friend who said "You'll know more than me, when is SQLBits?"

Not sure when I became the person in the know, but hey I'll take it! Sadly I'm not that person though.

Grant - yep I agree I need to know now, as it's going clash at this rate with some things I'm already committed to 🙁

  • I've been at my current gig now for nearly 11 months, and I finally was in a meeting where

    a) I knew what was going on

    b) Adding value to the meeting

    c) Led part of it

I think on a couple of occasions I ticked a), but the other two were firsts

And we have almost as many meetings as a council / Government body!

Scary, not sure if that says more about me or this work environment :-O

How many people are there typically in these numerous meetings? How many participants subtract value from the meeting? Those are the measures that say most about work environments which have lots of meetings.

Tom - Ha good point. Biggest number on a project meeting was 10 or 12. I was loosing what little left of mind I have have left!

This was 3 + 1 remote, internal team catchup on a project where the PM has taken a very hands off approach - which for me is the best possible situation from a PM! 😀

Our bi-weekly team meetings are up to 11 + 2 remote, with one permanent abstention. Now they drag. Luckily we can only use the Video conferencing room in bookable chunks of an hour, so at least they don't last longer than that!

The one team member who doesn't attend seems mostly depressed and angry about the project that takes up all his time. Not really sure if it's him saying no to the meetings or the team lead asking for him not to attend so to not bring the rest of us down, in a sort of Marvin type of way.

Yes there are too many meetings, yes they tend to invite anyone with remote connection to it.

We have yet to resort to a pre-meeting to discuss what the meeting is actually about. I've been to a couple of those when I worked at a council, a little surreal, but then I realised it was so the DBA's and Dev's can make sure the meetings didn't steer of course and we kept them as short as possible, CAB's at the council were the worst. 12 people on average and you were lucky if you had a vested interest in more than one change. And they dragged on. And there were always around 25 changes, so about half had no representative in the room.

Congratulations to Steve et al who founded it, keep up the good work.

I noticed that is was only 8 users away late last night. Steve, you've crossed another round number. Are you going to host a party when you hit the 2M mark? 😉

Sure, party at the ranch. 1-2pm, Sat afternoon. Hope you can make it.

I don't think I can walk fast enough, and besides I can't remember how to walk on water and there's an awful lot of that stuff in the way. And not being a BI type I dont have a jet.
