Now onto the reason I had time to catch-up today. I was informed that due to financial problems at my now former employer, my position has been eliminated effective immediately. So I have lots of time right now, other than looking for my next opportunity. I do have a couple of things I'd already been looking into, but I'm still interested in hearing about anything else north of Boston or remote.
Dude, ow. My condolences.

That's news nobody likes to hear. My condolences on the loss.

So I just spent about 25 minutes catching up on the thread. Had actually been busy at work and with life in general until today.Glad to hear Lynn gets a visit back to the states and still employed.
Glad no bare-chested pictures of Grant, or frankly anyone on the thread, have popped up here too.
Not sure what I think about the ability to mark a post as the answer or what worked. I think it can be helpful, but also may be used more often to mark an answer that worked, but isn't the best answer provided in the discussion. I do like the StackOverflow up-voting system, but that's about all I like out there.

How far south are you willing to go? I'm looking too right now and I've gotten a few contacts for up in NH. I'll tell any future ones to contact you. You wouldn't want the most recent, for some reason I'm getting several calls about Business Analyst positions.

I'm working on building a front end to a SQL Server database and I'm using ASP.NET. It has been a long time since I've done this and everything is completely different from what I remember. Anyone know of a good ASP.NET analogue to SQLServerCentral.com? I have questions and I'm not sure where is good.
There's so many damn options it is hard to figure out if any given answer matches the framework you're using.

You might give RDX a look. I interviewed with them while I was looking for work while still in Afghanistan. Never heard back from them but that's okay. The two hour technical interview covered mostly things I am weak on: MS Replication, Reporting Services, Analysis Services, Clustering. The few questions they asked me regarding performance tuning and indexing my answers seemed to surprise them a bit.
I was interviewing for a Remote DBA position, they may still be interested in filling such positions. Wouldn't hurt to check them out. I know I wouldn't mind working for them if I were unemployed right now.

I guess it is fortunate then that most of the bare chest in my avatar is covered by a big fish.
My thought question: Have you ever been told that your query runs too fast?
My advice:
INDEXing a poor-performing query is like putting sugar on cat food. Yeah, it probably tastes better but are you sure you want to eat it?
The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.

Can anyone take a look at thisamd suggest something better than what I have?
I've made an attempt to help, but I'm worried that my only idea is to use a trigger to enforce the required constraints (which are perfectly good relational constraints, just can't be expressed as constraints in SQL Server, at least as far as I can see). I've looked at various tricks (splitting the Resource table into 3 tables, for example) to try to get a trigger-free solution, but I haven't found anything that works without a trigger. Of course if the constraints could be expressed directly as constraints, without a trigger, the underlying implementation had better be equivalent to a trigger else performance will be all to pot, but while I'm perfectly happy with the system doing something equivalent to a trigger to implement a constraint I'm unhappy with the DBA having to write the trigger himself.

Jack,
Wow no notice period, not good, sorry to hear that.
I'm sure you'll get something sorted out soon.

Haven't spent much time in the forums (fora?) but the articles are excellent.
Thanks, I'll check it out.

It's ironic how frequently that happens to the good ones... mostly because the good ones deserve the pay they get and the high paid jobs that C-Levels and HR don't actually understand are the first to go in such a situation.
You'll do fine, Jack. You've got a good head on your shoulders and I have no doubt this will be a short excursion for you.

It's a 45kg Mekong Catfish that I caught at a fishing park on the outskirts of Bangkok (my home base) called Bung Sam Ran[/url]. The pond is also stocked with Giant Siamese Carp which are truly beautiful fish (unfortunately I've never caught one) and Arapaima, which is a huge fish indigenous to South America.
If anyone ever comes to visit me I'd be happy to accompany them on a fishing trip. I can promise all fisher-folk the best day of fishing they've ever had.
