He's calling summer on one sighting of a swallow.

He should come to Michigan. It was snowing to beat the band a couple of days ago and I had a Robin stop by the heated bird bath. Robins are normally the first sign of spring in Michigan. I guess that one didn't read BOL. πŸ˜€

A heated bird bath? Guess you'll be featured prominently in the next edition of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous!

The Rich and Famous Santa Claus

BWAA-HAAA!!!! Too funny! Nah... it does't cost that much. Debbie has one of those ceeeement birdbaths and I bought one of those small electric heaters that farmers put in cow watering troughs to keep the water from freezing in the winter. They keep the water at about 40oF. It's real overkill for a bird bath (designed for 100 gallon cow troughs) but it works and it doesn't cost much to run. It has a thermostat built into it. It's designed to be fully submersible.

Hmmm... maybe I should buy a cow trough and 4 of those heaters to make a poor man's hot tub. With as fat as I've gotten, there wouldn't be much water left in a 100 gallon trough so they wouldn't have to work very hard. πŸ˜€

    Hmmm hot tub. Hillbilly style.

Now what about the bubbles? Alka seltzer?

Nah. Too expensive. Beans for breakfast will do it. πŸ˜› Just don't wanna ever smoke while the agitator is in action. BOOM! :hehe:

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Those are the days we will forget when our children grow up. πŸ˜›

And they grow up so fast... πŸ™

They certainly age fast, but grow up - I'm not so sure. And I know my parents think the same thing. Our eldest is 30 this year and I still the teenager that he was when we met (I'm his step-father). My wife still occasionally sees the toddler.

  • A good friend used to regularly have a little moan about how little sex he was having with his girlfriend. "Once a fortnight - it's doing my head in!" Then one afternoon he called me up for a pint after work. "I know it's not good form, but I overheard her on the phone with one of her mates" he said. This is what he overheard his girlfriend telling her mate: "I have sex with him and he's happy and affectionate, like a puppy - and it's lovely. If I have sex with him again the same week, everybody notices he's happy and affectionate and suddenly he's the life and soul of the party and I'm left in the corner. I hate it! It puts me off sex for a whole month!"

Could anything be simpler, more black and white, than a tick in a box? Heh - could anything be more complicated...

  • There seems to be a new feature in the forums to mark answers that worked for the OP.

What do you think about this? I'm not sure if it's only possible to mark one answer or multiple answers. This seems to be common practice in other forums as I've been asked in the past about this feature.

Haven't seen it yet. Can you only do this if you started the topic? (and if yes, who is ever going to mark this thread as answered???)

I think it is a nice feature. I just hope we don't get parrots like in the MSDn forums who are just hoping to get their post marked as the answer.

Apparently, yes. You can only mark it if you started it.

The Oracle mechanism of the physical addressing is a signficant improvement because it removes all translation structures for row recovery from the non-clustered lookup upon finding the correct values. With a RID, you still need to do a lookup form because you have to locate where the File/Page/Slot is on the drive, and then you can perform your I/O. Clustered index or RID, you still lose that optimization path, so it's moot... no?

I have no idea how Oracle works.

With a physical RID, SQL has to just ask the OS for an 8k read at offset 8192*PageNumber in the file identified by File ID (assuming it's not in memory)

With a clustered index key, it has to query the metadata to locate the root page for that index, read that page, crack the page, read the rows to identify which page is needed in the level below. Fetch that page, Repeat until the leaf page is read.

From a bit of reading, it seems like Oracle has the ability to make block requests from attached block devices (local or network) with its "Automatic Storage Management", whereas Microsoft SQL Server uses regular old ntfs file system access through the api. Oracle then has the opportunity to skip a level of indirection here.

    Happy to be corrected however!
