Congrats Gail. I think the creep of the Thread may have reached unstoppable speed at this point. 😛

Just who is that creep this week?

Wouldn't the Creep of the Thread be "lurking"? Waiting for it's chance to post? :w00t:

Maybe. But since s/he is gaining speed, s/he is probably not waiting anymore.

OK. I'll 'fess up. I'm the lurker just waiting for the moment to post... 😎

I don't post often but when I do I prefer "Post Equis".

    Stay posting my friends.

  • Gotta love Oracle...

If a node in a RAC cluster loses communication with the cluster for a minute or two, it gets evicted. So far, so good. Except the eviction takes the form of one of the Oracle kernel-level drivers *forcing* a blue screen of the host.

    WTF?

    Really?

Had this happen yesterday to a node, thankfully there's nothing else except Oracle on these servers, so nothing else was impacted. But still, couldn't Oracle have found a more graceful way to handle this?

  • I've never used RAC on Windows, but assuming it's similar to Linux, I think it tries something graceful first, then Clusterware relieves it of its storage layer after a timeout period (I guess through a driver in Windows). If it didn't, it would never be able to remove locks on DB resources when a node goes rogue. One of the necessary compromises of a shared HA architecture - I'd rather an individual node was forcibly terminated than the whole DB go down...

You're running Oracle on Windows??? I tried that once at home years ago with one database server and one OAS server, but my drives kept filling up as soon as I did anything from a client. My employer at the time used Oracle on Unix and I wanted to play with it on Windows to test a theory, but it was so painful that I never went back. I think I'll stick with SQL Server for now.

  • Hey! The Oracle on Windows wasn't *my* choice, I just inherited it! As it is, I'm anxiously awaiting the day they *finally* get an Oracle certified DBA in, so I can hand it off to him / her, I'm *much* happier with MS-SQL!

Even the Oracle DBAs have said (heck, even *I've* said) that Oracle would be much happier on a Unix / Linux server, but because of the requirements around this place, it's not going to happen...

  • OK, where did the year go?

I mean seriously, 12 days until X-Mas? It feels like it was only a couple weeks ago I was starting this job and planning my vacation...

I know what you mean, Jason. Christmas is almost here and my shopping isn't done. Winter is also here are we're supposed to get 3" to 6" starting tonight. Seize each day and try to make the most of it.

From the snow you're talking about, sounds like you're in my neck of the woods.

Which means tomorrow or Sunday, I get to see how my sportly little, low slung car can handle it!

Finally warming up a bit here. Some areas have been getting snow by the foot, so the 8" we got last week wasn't so bad. The ice storms are the worst - I can't imagine being without lights and heat for days.

Yeah, I think you're in Warren, MI, right? I'm west of you in Bloomfield Hills. It's supposed to start tonight and a winter weather advisory starts at 9:00 PM. Granted, we've been pretty lucky so far compared to the rest of the country, but this is Michigan and we know it's coming.

Yeah, although up north is already getting decent snow I believe...

Time to (finally) get the lawn mower and snow blower switched around in the garage, and fire up the snow blower for the first time...
