Are the posted questions getting worse?

First of all, thanks to Steve for fixing the SQL formatting issues in my recently published article:

How to Design, Build and Test a Dynamic Search Stored Procedure [/url]

So I'm chatting on Skype with a Security Engineer friend of mine, telling him about the articles that SSC has so graciously published for me and I send him a link to my Guest Columnist page.

Within seconds he tells me the email address I registered to the site and then shortly thereafter I get an email with a link that says "if you want to change your password, press this link."

The @#$@@ is trying to hack my SSC account! Just goes to show what happens when you befriend and ethical hacker!

Hope that link expires so I don't need to change my password.

Nice work, Dwain. I hope people see the methodical approach you took to solve the problem and take it to heart.

Thank you sir! I just hope it makes someone's life a little easier somewhere down the line.

My mantra: No loops! No CURSORs! No RBAR! Hoo-uh![/I]

My thought question: Have you ever been told that your query runs too fast?

    My advice:
INDEXing a poor-performing query is like putting sugar on cat food. Yeah, it probably tastes better but are you sure you want to eat it?
The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.

    Fundamental DBA skill - telepathy

I think once you get to know your users and company, often it does appear you have telepathy if you're good.

  • It would appear that someone decided to switch off a bunch of import jobs on one of servers.

Spookily they didn't run from 1st Nov to 4th Nov inclusive. So the day after Halloween and the day before Guy Forkes nights... Dun Dun Daaaah.

I think someone's definitely out to get you. πŸ˜‰ Instead of starting with the ghosts, I'd start with people who have access to switch the jobs off. They're a little more responsive to being beaten with sticks. πŸ˜€

  • So, put up gutter guard over the week to keep the back gutters on the house from filling with leaves, still need to get some to finish off the gutters.

Might as well, this weekend, fire up the leaf blower / vac and get the leaves up off the back yard...

Gutter guards are awesome things, especially if you have a 2-story house. It takes forever to clear and move...clear and move. Did you install the screen-style (flow through) or the solid-style (flow over)?

I've got a single-story, actually, but a big honkin' tree in the back yard which dumps right into the gutters...

I went with the "flow-over" style. They're made from the sort of material some air-vents filters are made from. Kind of a foam material. Came up short by about 10-12ft though, so going to buy another box (if Costco still has them) this weekend.

I know what you mean. I have large trees in my back yard as well. IMHO, I think you made the right selection by going with the flow-over style. I had a neighbor once who went with the screens and they just clogged up and he had to get up there anyway.

Don't you just love Costco? πŸ˜› They sell pretty good stuff, price it decently and give you a lot of it.

My problem isn't the trees dropping the leaves into the gutters. It the leaves that blow around and collect at the doors to the house - constant sweeping so that we don't track them in.

And the fact that there are so darn many of them. Even after the trees are bare, they just keep coming. :w00t:

  • Interesting. Wonder what some you think?

  • Well, finally done it. Created a blog site via WordPress.com (because I really don't want to mess around any more than I need to). Basically somewhere to leave useful information for myself, but in a presentable format (hopefully).

    http://sqlrambling.net/

It will probably be subject to apparently random changes as I get to grips with the WordPress software and options.

Teddy Roosevelt gave incredible access to reporters and encouraged them to root out corruption and problems. If you can find honest, ethical reporters, it can be a great thing for the country. I'm all in favor of greater governmental openness and transparency. I'm only not in favor of leaks if they're done by the government in an attempt to silence critics.

My first thought is about the author. I have his book "Applied Cryptography" on my shelf at work.

Transparency on the part of government would be great, but there are too many hidden agendas by all those involved. The system could work, as Stefan said, if we had honest people involved.

You know, thinking about this some more, it really is a shame we aren't more honest and transparent as a whole. I wonder what this says about us as a global society. It makes me wonder how people of the future will view this period in history from their perspective. They'll have the benefit of hindsight, which we don't have when considering our own time.

One thing's for sure...Reading that article sure did inspire some serious thought about the subject.
