Last day of freedom. Starting dev job tomorrow. Hopefully will go well...

I'm unlikely to be around much during the week from now on (at least for a while), so could someone else please watch for and field corruption-related questions?

Heh.... don't forget to study for the urine test. πŸ˜€

Wrong country, I'm not in the USA πŸ™‚

It's not a federal mandate or anything, but everyone I've ever worked for does drug testing.

Really? I only had that happen once, 20 years ago and the testing facility lost my sample. So very reliable these companies are.

I've only had a few that have done drug testing. Currently they like to take a big swatch of hair for it.

Never heard of it being done here, not for any job. They do background checks, verify education, that kind of thing, but not drug tests.

Here they do all that, plus drug tests, credit checks and they call your references. Many companies have other checks for certain positions and there's been a push for more security checks lately.

Some places do anyway. Only ever had one drug screen, most places haven't bothered with any references at all. I've only had places want to check my credit twice. Once I walked out right after the interview when they said they wanted to do that, the other time they told me they would up front and I told them they had no business doing that and that I no longer wanted the position. It is all baseless paranoia, pure and simple. It is like the TSA, they're magical steps people think will protect them from bad things. They'd be as well served by making all applicants wear a rhinestone collar to ward off evil.

Stefan, I couldn't agree more. All these checks don't actually protect anyone or prevent anything from happening. It's like the security cameras that are now everywhere. They don't make anyone safer or prevent any crime from occurring, but only make it easier to catch people who commit a crime. What both of these things really do is to create more security holes for white-collar criminals to find and abuse.

  • The only place I've worked at that wanted to do a credit check was the bank, and they did have a good reason. New company did background and education checks because their insurer insists on those being done for all staff

Yes - Pacific Northwest, before that Silicon Valley.

Weird. My last several companies after leaving the large Manhattan-based bank haven't. Including the large insurance company.

  • So, here's a goofy question:

What font and size do you have your SSMS text set to?

I'm trying to come up with one that I like for both readability and how much can fit on-screen at once.

I tried Times New Roman at 8point, couldn't read it (20yrs ago, probably, now...)

I just set SSMS to use Terminal at 9point, which might be the happy medium in terms of size and readability for me...

I thought about using WingDings, but I don't need to obfuscate my code like that...

Although it'd be fun to have someone looking over my shoulder and wondering what the heck I'm doing...

    :hehe:

Mine are at the SSMS default: Courier New 10. I suppose I could change it, but I never bothered. Maybe if I have to go back to small monitors at my next job.

I wonder how long it would take you to learn to read the WingDings font fluently.

    Wingdings might be fun.

For me it depends on which machine I am using and whether or not I am presenting or not.

I do typically prefer a black background though.

  • Consolas 10pt usually. 18-28pt if I'm presenting, depending on where.

I'm at the default as well.

For presenting I do change the size to at least 16pt.
