Are the posted questions getting worse?

    Please?

It is hot here, hotter than I'd expect for mid-sept. Some short-lived snow would be very welcome.

  • Had a good weekend in Orlando for SQLSaturday 232. As usual the crew down there did a great job organizing. My session went well and was pretty well received. It's amazing how fast an hour goes by.

Ditto that. According to this morning's news, there are still 1,200 people still unaccounted for. My heart goes out to those affected. It's one of those things I'd not wish on anyone.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.

Sorry, I don't think the snow maker can throw quite that far...

But yes, it's been an odd September here, too. Early last week we got up into the 90s, then it went down to the mid-60s (Farenheit,) and today it's not even supposed to make the mid-60s...

Going to be an interesting winter...

What happened? Nothing new in here all weekend, and it's not even any sort of a holiday anywhere (that I'm aware of at least...)

It's Independence day in Mexico and the streets look empty in one of the largest cities in the world. But I'm still in the office since 7:30 am :crying:

Same here. My husband and I lost our home in a flash flood 6 years ago and were fortunate enough to be at work when it happened. I have a special place in my heart and my prayers for flood victims.

Yeah...seeing the footage on the Weather Channel this weekend really drove it home as to how serious of a situation it is. My prayers go out to everyone in the area.

How does one go about organizing a SQL Saturday?

Anybody up for joining one in Bangkok?

Get a space to hold some sessions. I bet if you could get 1 room for 50 people, they'd come. Once you have space, the rest is easy. You can call for speakers and usually find a few. It's not that hard. You can provide lunch, or leave a break in the schedule and let people go feed themselves. All the other stuff events do is extra.

Likely I wouldn't make Bangkok, unless I was in the area. We are talking about a SQL in the City in Singapore at some point. Maybe we'd come to Bangkok if the timing was right.

We're fine. Driveway washed low in a few spots, so I have work to do, but otherwise OK. The NoCol group might be struggling. Some evacs up that way, and some washed out roads.

    Ed,

Go to http://www.sqlsaturday.com and see if there is a way to register for event notifications. That way if one pops up near you again, you can see the notification before instead of after the event.

From my experience the best way to find out about new events is to speak at one 😀 I get email notifications for every SQLSaturday.

Being on Twitter and LinkedIn (join the tech groups). I know I promote SQLSaturday's I organize on both.

How does one go about organizing a SQL Saturday?

Anybody up for joining one in Bangkok?

You start here. Karla is really good at walking you through the first one. Then you ask questions in places like this because some of us have organized at least one.

    Thanks Jack!

My mantra: No loops! No CURSORs! No RBAR! Hoo-uh![/I]

My thought question: Have you ever been told that your query runs too fast?

    My advice:
INDEXing a poor-performing query is like putting sugar on cat food. Yeah, it probably tastes better but are you sure you want to eat it?
The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.

Need to UNPIVOT? Why not CROSS APPLY VALUES instead?[/url]

Only 101 more shopping days until X-Mas!

Space is something I believe I could easily arrange.

I hear there is one coming up in Manila within a couple of months. I'm anxious to hear when the one in Singapore is scheduled.
