    Just ....

Microsoft will no longer offer Masters and Architect level training rotations and will be retiring the Masters level certification exams as of October 1, 2013.

Sent late on a Friday night, right before a USA long weekend.

At least I no longer have to worry about budgeting for the upgrade exam.

    That's just sad.

and I sent a write-up on the situation to Steve. When, where, how and if it gets published remains to be seen.

  • I'll probably never go for the MCM or any other certification that MS has to offer (now that I've seen what MS does with the cream of the crop, I'm certain of it) but I voted up the CONNECT item asking to keep it. I encourage anyone that sees this to do likewise because, like Gail, Grant, Tom, and a couple of other people that I have a huge respect for have all stated, it's about the only MS cert that I respect and the people that busted a hump to get it deserve for it to be preserved. This is like saying that a PHD from MIT is null and void and too bad for all you Seniors that have been studying. The people that have been studying for it for the last year or so deserve to at least take the test. One month notice certainly isn't enough warning.

Here's the link that Steve posted to the CONNECT item on the MCM thread...

    https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/799431/please-dont-get-rid-of-the-mcm-and-mca-programs

Shifting gears, my hat is off and I bow deeply to all of you that have either attained the MCM or have studied your butts off getting ready for it. I know a great many of you and it won't help you get a job or a deserving title but, in my eyes and in the eyes of a majority of the community, all of you were MCMs long before you even took a shot at it. Please don't let this huge mistake by Microsoft change that.

First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Just popped in today to check on this thread, and saw this...

First, to Gail: You will *always* be a SQL Master to me (maybe I could be your Padawan? 😀 )

Second, WTF is going on at MS? First, they go and kill off the Technet subscription, pissing of scads of people of various levels (from consultants who used the subscription software for testing out upgrade scenarios, to home / self-learners like myself,) now they go and kill off *THE* top certification, really the one which people in the industries would respect from MS (and I say this having several MS certs of the MCITP / MCSA variety.) You'd think MS execs are *trying* to drive the company under...

Lastly, I did vote for the Connect item to save the MCM program, but found the 2nd workaround someone posted somewhat amusing. A link to the Oracle Master certification...:hehe:

Regardless, to all the MCMs here: (we need a saluting smiley)

YAY! I have a new computer at work.

Which means I have just spent all morning recovering all my SSMS options, importing my email files, etc. etc. And now I have to figure out how to force BIDS to open up T-SQL into SSMS.

I did it once. I just can't remember where the setting is hiding.

Ah, the pain and pleasure of getting a new PC. Just returned from vacation and there's a new one sitting on my desk.

    Pain: Already noted.

Pleasure: Has SQL 2012 installed. Yep! Look out. Time to play. 😛

More pain not previously noted. The bozos installed 32 bit versions of everything. Grrrr!

It does (at least to me) for 2 reasons:

    1. I plan to upgrade to 8GB.

    2. I specifically asked for 64 bit applications and no one verified with me whether 32 bit would be OK before proceeding.

My mantra: No loops! No CURSORs! No RBAR! Hoo-uh![/I]

My thought question: Have you ever been told that your query runs too fast?

    My advice:
INDEXing a poor-performing query is like putting sugar on cat food. Yeah, it probably tastes better but are you sure you want to eat it?
The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.

Not so sure about that. Yes, 64 bit Windows machines are able to run 32 bit versions of the same software, but they have to thunk down to 32 bit mode, so that's an additional overhead.

It's not quite the same situation as we had on the Windows 9x series, where 32-bit applications were having to thunk down into the 16-bit, non-reentrant core components all the time--the translation from 64-bit to 32-bit is considerably lighter and less intrusive. Microsoft claim that a 32-bit application running under WOW64 performs pretty much the same as it would on a 32-bit OS running on the same hardware, and I've never seen anything that would suggest that's wrong.

The main issue with 32-bit apps is their limitation to 4Gb of RAM, but note that this is actually better than the same 32-bit app running on a 32-bit system, which would be limited to 2Gb due to the other half of the memory map being reserved for system use. Still, if you're intending to do some serious SQL work on the machine, that limitation could become an issue!

Yep. I got the error, waited 1 min and tried again, got the error again, waited 5 mins and tried again, 3rd time lucky - no error.
