My thought question: Have you ever been told that your query runs too fast?

    My advice:
INDEXing a poor-performing query is like putting sugar on cat food. Yeah, it probably tastes better but are you sure you want to eat it?
The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.

Personally, my new laptop is 32gb ram, with multiple SSD drives (I have plans for presentations with many VMs running...). I'm still getting stuff installed on it, so I hope to start using it soon.

What kind of laptop did you get that allows for multiple SSDs? I'd love to have something like that.

My Thinkpad does it by pulling the DVD drive and putting in a tray that holds an SSD. It works great. I've seen bigger laptops (there's a monster that all the SQL Skills people use) that just have two bays.

  • Need a new laptop. My little HP is starting to feel decidedly dated with only 3GB memory.

  • I'm not sure I would sacrifice the DVD drive for an SSD. I guess it depends on whether or not I could get stuff on my portable USB drives that I would normally get on DVD.

What kind of HP do you have, Gail? My new one is a Pavilion G4.

If you would use the internal drive more than you'd use a dvd drive, get a usb dvd player. Rip most things you'd use to flash sticks (They're as large as 128G now) and use the dvd player for installs or ripping (if you don't have a desktop)
