Brandie,If you go to Crucial.com, you can either enter your mfg/model or use their tool to scan your laptop and they will tell you exactly what type and configuration your system can take and what the max RAM capacity will be. Their prices have typically been reasonable as well, although there are definitely many other places to shop. Since I have a hard time keeping up with all the different sizes, varieties and options, their service has really been helpful when I needed to upgrade (no, I don't work there, but I did work for Micron many, many years ago and have used Crucial's site since then).
Thanks,
Chad
Speaking of the tool, I found a discrepancy once between their site and the tool. I called them up and they said the tool was correct. Better yet is that the site was pulling the information from HP (which was also wrong). Needless to say, I used what the tool recommended and have been very happy.

I have 16GB in my laptop, and SSDs, and it runs great for me.
My wife and son each have 8GB for their W8 machines and are happy overall with how things work.
The Surface Pro has 4GB (and SSD). I watched Aaron King in Fargo do a demo of SSAS, SSRS, SSIS on it. Rather impressed. Slow in a few spots, but rather amazing.
I'd think 8GB is fine, 16GB if you want VMs and multiple things running that use the memory.

Thanks for that tip, Chad. Nice thing is that you can use it from anywhere in the world, get the correct info, then tell the vendor exactly what you want, no matter where you go to.

Laptop specs: it depends on what you want to do with it. If you plan on using it for just general purpose stuff, including connecting to remote SQL servers to run SSMS against, etc. then 4-8GB is fine. Presentations, with up to 1 VM, then again 4-8GB has worked good for me. If you want to run multiple VMs, then you probably want 16gb ram minimum.
If you're developing, I like to run with the barest, most limiting that I can do. If I can make that perform fast, then better machines should run fine. Today, I'd do that with a VM.
Personally, my new laptop is 32gb ram, with multiple SSD drives (I have plans for presentations with many VMs running...). I'm still getting stuff installed on it, so I hope to start using it soon.

Somehow this seems better than just staring at the little looping green circle and the words "Executing Query" while I wait for the database to be set offline. (Or any other query really)

Weekend recap:Fly to Texas to visit family.
Sunday, pull up airline to check in 24 hrs before flight home. It doesn't find me or my confirmation #.
Digging around, I find that I booked my return flight for Tuesday, not Monday. whoops.
Tell wife, beg forgiveness (she has to cancel things with her clients on Tuesday).
Call boss, beg forgiveness, and get things arranged for covering me for everything I had going on for Tuesday... π
Yowza. (Deep Sigh)
Um, yeah, just so you can make your wife feel better...
I scheduled our honeymoon flight couple months in advance. 3 weeks before, our computer blew and we lost our eTicket. During the course of getting it back, found out that I scheduled us to leave the day *before* our wedding.
Almost the shortest marriage on record, luckily we found out in advance...
