    If you can, yes.

I've got 32gb on mine currently and I'm terribly happy with it. Last one had 16gb and it was good, but not as good as this. I haven't seen a laptop that supports more than that yet.

Hm. I should see how much this laptop will go up to. Currently I've only got 4GB, so it looks like an upgrade is definitely in order.

Most laptops have only 2 slots for RAM.

You also have limitations - bios and OS - that can play a factor.

Be sure to understand how to limit memory to SQL if you plan to really test.

Otherwise you can have SQL and the OS fighting each other.

I have a local Micro Center which is usually a good place to get RAM.

  • The HP documentation (for my model) is telling me that the max memory support is based on my OS. Does that sound about right for what they're doing with hardware these days? Because 64bit Windows 8 Pro can support up to 512GB which doesn't sound right to me for a laptop.

Though that would be really cool if I could get that much memory running off my laptop.

EDIT: On a reread, that's not quite what the documentation is saying after all. HP just says "Information about the maximum amount of memory is not available at this time.".

    Hrm.

Since laptops tend to have only 2 RAM slots, doesn't that mean you'd have to find 2 256GB chips?

Probably. Looking further, Windows 7 Business (which is what I guess they're calling Professional, but I'm not 100% on that) allows for 192GB in the laptop. Which makes me wonder if the laptop really is designed for major memory usage. I'll have to look at my options and see what I've got available to me in SODIMM.

    #headdesk

Aren't Friday's supposed to be the easy day of the week?

Nothing worse than coming into the office (after a late night doing scheduled maintenance) and hearing "the vendor apps are offline."

And since the maintenance had nothing to do with the vendor apps, this is an entirely different sort of pain for which I have to start troubleshooting from scratch.

It's FRIDAY. Didn't the servers get that memo?

    Brandie,

You know, those twitter hashtags just don't convey the meaning that I think you're trying to imply. But I think I have something that I can help you with here... let's see...

uh.... where can I get one of those hammers? I use the "everything looks like a nail" quote often and that is an awesome visual. If there isn't a retail outlet, I'm so looking for a local shop that can engrave it for me.... and a few for my friends.... oohhh.... user group SWAG? I like it. Hope it's cheap.

I am currently at 16GB and am happy with that amount. But, I can always use more and have been trying to get to 32GB. I would really like to have a laptop with 128GB ram and a 3TB fusion-io card, but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

  • Weekend recap:

Fly to Texas to visit family.

Sunday, pull up airline to check in 24 hrs before flight home. It doesn't find me or my confirmation #.

Digging around, I find that I booked my return flight for Tuesday, not Monday. whoops.

Tell wife, beg forgiveness (she has to cancel things with her clients on Tuesday).

Call boss, beg forgiveness, and get things arranged for covering me for everything I had going on for Tuesday... 🙁

    Yowza. (Deep Sigh)

  • Brandie,

If you go to Crucial.com, you can either enter your mfg/model or use their tool to scan your laptop and they will tell you exactly what type and configuration your system can take and what the max RAM capacity will be. Their prices have typically been reasonable as well, although there are definitely many other places to shop. Since I have a hard time keeping up with all the different sizes, varieties and options, their service has really been helpful when I needed to upgrade (no, I don't work there, but I did work for Micron many, many years ago and have used Crucial's site since then).

    Thanks,

    Chad
