The media server piece is pretty cool. Once you have the raspbmc software, lots of add ins for audio/video/images that you can use. I'm now thinking how I might add a screen for this in the kitchen.

  • There's a nice missing note in this warning from Steve in the Employer / Employee section - it surprises me that it has survived over six years without correction:

This forum is designated as a place where you can discuss positive or negative issues about your employer. Remember this is a public forum, so don't post anything you'd want your employer to read.

  • So I just upgraded my new laptop from Win 7 Home Premium to Win 8 Pro and ... Well, darnit, I can't figure out how to find my network card's MAC address. Because I was foolish enough that I did the backup and upgrade before I did anything else.

Apparently Win 8 Pro doesn't have the Metro UI. Or at least nothing I recognize at all from the examples I keep seeing on the web. Hit the Windows button and I flip flop between what looks like a desktop sans start bar / button or a tiled display with email / networking / etc. on it.

Any suggestions on how I can find my MAC addy without being able to get an ipconfig?

Why can't you just do an IPConfig? Win 8 has a few ways to bring up a cmd window (task manager is my favourite). Win 8 Pro does come with the metro interface, I've been using Win 8 Pro at work pretty much since release. I like it, although I must admit I cheated and installed Classic Shell[/url] so restored the start menu.

Why can't you just do an IPConfig?

Because until Greg gave me the keystrokes I needed, I couldn't get to a command line.

    Greg, I owe you donuts.

I learned this in Win 7, which I used for a year before being aware of it. Once you have the Start menu (or start screen), just start typing.

I hit the Windows key, type C-M-D, hit enter, and I have a command prompt.

Windows+R is one of my favorite keystrokes in windows. Another favorite is Windows+L

I've been using these key combinations since win95 to get to things like the command prompt, services control panel, device manager etc.

Windows + E (opens windows explorer)

    Windows + D (minimize/restore all windows toggle)

There are tons of keyboard shortcuts.

Check out the attached pdf for a long list of some. Some of them are great and others seem to be totally useless.

I'll try that the next time I boot it up (AFter I finish grabbing the updates). I think I figured out which screen is supposed to be the start screen. Maybe. Like I said, I don't see anything like the menu shown in internet examples.

Fortunately I have a working laptop right now. The Win 7 (ex-Vista) hasn't bit the dust yet. Now that I've regreased my heat sink it might give me another couple of years. Though the fact that I broke the volume wheel and the SD Card slot when I put the motherboard back into the case makes me wonder what else I might have screwed up.

I am now the proud owner of my first 64 bit OS, BTW. Which means I now have to get 64-bit SQL Dev software for that laptop. It'll be interesting to see what the diff betwent the 32 and 64 bit SQL is, performance-wise.

Unless you up the RAM, probably slower.

    But likely not very noticable.
