Are the posted questions getting worse?

At the risk of either being pulled or diving into a storm (in truth, I suspect and hope, neither:rolleyes:) I've had a brief play with 8 and I'm not a fan. I certainly don't think it's broken and unusable but it's "different". For me it's the little things like it loading into the "Metro" view by default when I want the desktop view. Yes I can switch back with a keystroke but now I have to switch back with a keystroke. And I know I can still do everything I used to with the start menu by other means but I liked the start menu, I was used to it and I didn't need other means. All my criticsms are really just niggles but niggles add up to frustration.

It's like my fridge door that insists on swinging closed all the time because I've never got around to setting the feet right. Sure I can hold it open but that doesn't stop it aggrevating me when it keeps bumping my shoulder while I'm rummaging through the vegetable tray. I really must sort those feet out.

I have to work some with the same UI and the nagging thing for me is that the experience doesn't get better with time, theres no sense of the UI getting out of my way and letting me just get to work. Since the system I need to work on is fairly locked down, I don't really have the option to install addons, so I'm pretty much stuck with it as it is.

I think eventually I could adjust (like a prisoner eventually adjusts to his cell LOL) but that would probably also mean not spending time with better desktop UI's to the extent that I could eventually forget what a normal desktop operates like, I'm thinking thats the sort of behavioral adaptation I would have to experience before the UI didn't nag at me.

To be fair I probably didn't play with it long enough to start finding the benefits it was going to give me but I certainly got confronted with the niggles. As I say, it certainly didn't strike me as broken and it isn't going to be the downfall of Microsoft but I do think the "change for change's sake" argument holds some water. I understand that they're trying to unify the desktop experience with handheld/touchscreen experience and think it's a worthy goal but it struck me that they could have left a few extra nods to my desktop past and made it a much more comfortable experience.

Did you give any of the Stardock addins a try? Your experience mirrors mine, but with the exception of the UI, the release is actually getting some good reviews from the technical point of view, and having a current release of Windows really has its plusses. All the bad news and sorry results for Microsoft pretty much involves the mistakes with the UI.

On a side note, my gaming rig still runs Vista (yes, it's that old). It's about to be upgraded in the next month or two which means I'm getting Windows 8, so I've just started to look into the review sites. I have no idea if they're right or not yet.

Don't feel too bad. My "gaming rig" is running XP Pro. :w00t: Unlike you I have no immediate upgrade plans. Of course the lack of an upgrade plan is mostly because there really aren't any games that interest me at the moment.

    Ha - mine is still running WFW3.11 - I think. Haven't touched it in a while ๐Ÿ˜€

    Case in point.

Q: I'm seeing multiple plans in cache for the same procedure

A: It might be due to parameter sniffing. Add WITH RECOMPILE to the procedure.

Why do people not believe that recommendation. I make that recommendation at least 3 times a week and yet they refuse to do something like that.

Anyway, I reckon Windows 8 is super. ... it all runs well and a lot faster than it would on similar hardware under XP

    That must be a joke!

    I'm sure it is.

I still have Windows XP Pro running on HP Vectra having Pentium II 350 (MHz, it's 0.35 GHz), 256 MB RAM (not sure about MHz here, must be 200 or so), IDE100 hard drive with 8GB dedicated for the system partition.

    LOL I hear ya!

As recent as 2008 or so, my regular desktop was a 500 mhz with 512 ram. I had two faster computers, but they were strictly for cpu intensive stuff like audio rendering that I didn't want bogging down my desktop with, so for whatever reason, my desktop was often the 500mhz system running a very ratty and out of date linux circa 2003 maybe. In that, if I needed to log into work, I ran xp sp2 in a virtual machine with vmware player so I could use the company vpn. Yep, didn't spend much money on computers thats for sure :w00t:

Without addressing any person here at all, I'm going to summise this would not work with 8 taking xp's place in that configuration!

uh.... where can I get one of those hammers? I use the "everything looks like a nail" quote often and that is an awesome visual. If there isn't a retail outlet, I'm so looking for a local shop that can engrave it for me.... and a few for my friends.... oohhh.... user group SWAG? I like it. Hope it's cheap.

I'm pretty sure you are right about that. MS some time back recommended a minimum RAM size of 1GB for 32-bit systems, 2GB for 64-bit. Perhaps not a big problem for Microsoft though, as it's been pretty hard to buy a system with only 512MB RAM for quite a few years now.
