...but to be fair, Tom was attacked first. Patrick was less than kind in his phrasing.

I'm absolutely willing to learn here. How would you have phrased it?

Not a big web user eh? Its not like people haven't been discussing this to death.

I'm not sure if this is what Brandie was referring to (just a guess), but if so it could easily be interpreted as snark; of course, it could have just been good-natured sarcasm - always hard to tell with no visual/tonal cues to play with.

Well I would have called it good-natured sarcasm, but snarky's ok too!

I can't speak to the desktop version however I have a Windows Phone with windows 8 on it. I also have a MS Touch. I find that there are few minor annoyances with things but I find some things about every OS (all previous Windows, Linux, iOS, Android) that are annoying.

Overall I am very happy with my phone. The responsiveness is very quick and there has been none of that annoying lag so common with Androids. The "closed system" is similar to the iPhone which I find kind of annoying. The only real gripe I have is that there is only 1 sound channel. This is major oversight that is just completely stupid. If I am at my desk listening to music on my headphones and the phone rings, it rings on the speaker of the phone so the whole office hears it. Another annoyance of the volume is that if the ringer volume is all the way down you can't hear voicemail until you turn it up.

WP8 is immature in a few ways, in the same way iOS3, 4 were. I'm it will get better over time.

I think most of the systems are fairly closed. Even the Androids, while easier to root or sideload, are "closed" somewhat at the stores. Google play is the most open, but not as open as PCs.

    What's an MS Touch?

The lack of apps is somewhat of an issue but that is a user issue and not a fault of the phone.

The lack of apps is an issue. I was considering a WP8 phone. I have about 12-14 apps on the iPhone I really use every week, however 3-4 of them weren't built on the WP platform. So I bought an Android instead.

Until the platform grows, it's an issue.

    What's an MS Touch?

I believe that is the toy that Grant is playing with. Or was that a Surface?

I am curious if I'm forgetting some older MS product.

I thought he was talking about the iPod Touch here with an older iOS on it.

One of Brandies earlier posts did indicate that she didn't much like that particular remark, so I imagine your guess is correct.

I was somewhat irritated by that pair of sentences, and did comment on them in my reply to that message; but I recognised that they probably were not intended to offend, so told him I was giving the nice version of my response rather than actually writing the nasty version (or something to that effect).

In response to Patrick, it would have better phrased something like "There is a lot of discussion of this on the web. Have you not seen anything that indicates what the problems are?" which seems very much less like a snide remark.

Touch has been available since at least Vista.

Although I think displays that support it seem to be much more common lately.

And the cost has come down.

Think back to some of the 'all in one' PC's.

I found them intriguing, but somewhat expensive and a step back in hardware power.

  • So I've been working in a more DEV DBA team, working along side the production DBAs. Odd haven't less access!

    But anyway,

Currently working on an upgrade - both platform and third party application / db upgrade. So we have a nice shiny 2008 OS / 2012 SQL VM box. I restored all the db's - about 500 GB worth. Ran the vendor supplied upgrade scripts over 3 days. Was then moving on to the next step of testing. When...

    The server disappeared.

    Nothing, no RDP, no ping.

Emailed the server team. Was told that they can't see it either.

Was in a meeting at the time about the project... So told them. You can guess their reaction.

    So what had happened?

One of the server team had accidently renamed it and then deleted it. :-O

Then it turns out they don't keep backups of any of the drives other than C: :crying:

So this morning we have a restored OS and SQL. Only it's not running because the system db's aren't there!

Oh and they attached the following storage - pagefile, log, tempdb, backups...

    Spot what was missing!

    ...

So have now requested the 500 GB data drive.

Now waiting on install media for that server as I don't have the correct domain access to copy over from the installs share...

I know this is all fairly bad and the PM is, to say the least, no happy (the project had fallen behind due to resource and we had somewhat caught up), but these things happen and I'm sure we will learn from it.

But the look on the server guy who did it, was a picture when he was explaining and apologising.

Reminded me of the first time I ran an update without the where clause!

    Rodders...

  • Hey Steve, which apps. I'm just curious. I moved to a WP last fall and with one exception, I've found it better than my Droid. The exception is the Swype data entry. God that was nice on a phone.

I simply can't understand why any rational person would take the view that Windows 8 is a disaster

    ...

Too many such sites cover almost only (mostly imaginary) cons, because any any pro comment causes a series of silly ad-hominem attacks against its writer which deters any subsequent pro comment.

Tom: would it be out of line to point out that you decry the use of ad hominem attacks to discourage posting counter arguments, but you yourself dismiss anybody who disagrees with your premise as lacking in rationality? I get that you want to discourage the use of hyperbole (even if one doesn't love the Windows 8 interface, calling it a "disaster" may be overkill), but you seem to fall into a similar trap yourself (if one feels compelled to rail against Windows 8 then one must be an irrational person).

Steve, you make a good point, but to be fair, Tom was attacked first. Patrick was less than kind in his phrasing.

I'm absolutely willing to learn here. How would you have phrased it?

The phrase in question ("Not a big web user eh? Its not like people haven't been discussing this to death.") comes across as harsh and belittling. The word choices make it sound as if you're questioning Tom's intelligence and ability to use technology. It is very confrontational and insulting, which is why I called you out in an earlier post about being harsh.

You could have responded with actual facts about why you think Windows 8 is a bad OS. You might have even linked to specific references about problems with the OS. Instead the first two sentences in your post insulted his ability to use a search engine when he clearly stated in his first sentence:

I've seen a lot of ranting about how the different UI in Windows 8 makes it very difficult for someone used to older versions of Windows to use it...

He then went on to ask for specific details with what was wrong in Windows 8 as below.

Now can someone tell me what all the fuss is about? Please? I just don't understand what the difficulties are...

But instead of answering that question, your post just gave the same non-specific details he'd seen in other posts.

I read the combination of your first 2 sentences and the generic non-answer of the rest of the post as an uncalled for attack because Tom didn't have issues with Windows 8. Because I can't see your body language, hear your tone of voice, and because I don't know you at all, the attack is all I can see. If you were trying to be funny, the funny failed.

Posting is a delicate art. What we write is always going to be read differently than we intended. One person's joke is another person's cause for war. Given that future employers and co-workers have started reading communities like this, we always want to put our best foot forward. Which means all of us (even me, I'm just as guilty as anyone of accidental insults) should be re-check our posts for unintended ambiguities or insults before we hit submit.

The difference being that his dinosaurs comment came across as a generic reference and was not directed specificially at anyone in this thread. Whereas your comment was specifically directed at him and made about him.

Yes, he could have phrased that better. But he did not say "Patrick is a bone-headed old dinosaur," he made his reference very generic.

Granted, you don't know Tom as well as some of us, but I personally find the dinosaur reference funny because Tom is an older gentleman who is more capable of adapting to new tech than many of my own (younger than him) age group.
