Are the posted questions getting worse?

  • Several years back, my team was consigned to a seventh floor group of cubes for a few months during a remodel. My boss had an office with a window overlooking a rooftop. The crows liked that particular side of the building and would attack the glass to get to him.

These were BIG crows, BTW. And they'd just swoop up to the window and start clawing and pecking at it.

That "show of nature" freaked him out. He was so glad when we moved away from that spot.

I would have found an old paper back of Hitchcock's 'The Birds' and dropped it on his desk.

The last few cubes I had faced windows.

I liked the light, but they just looked out over a parking lot.

Probably the most exciting thing I watched was athunderstorm with baseball sized hail pounding everything in the lot.

Yep, I drove my new truck in that day.

Exciting but sad at the same time.

I once worked in one of those buildings with an all glass façade. None of the windows opened, but we still had a weird moment with them. One day we heard a loud thump from the windows, which was weird because we were on the third floor. My co-worker jumped and let out a little horrified yelp because she'd seen what happened. A bird flew right into one of the windows to her left, wings outstretched. She liked animals and was shaken up by this. It was made worse because the impact left a bird-shaped outline on the glass that didn't go away for months. Every time she looked out the window, she'd get sad again.

You know, having a window at work can be both a boon and a curse...

Boon because, especially if it opens, you can get fresh air, bright sunshine...

Curse for the exact same reasons, especially on nice days...

I keep feeling the breeze on my neck, and wishing I'd tossed my golf clubs in the trunk of the car so I could sneak out early...

    Windows that OPEN??!?!

The windows here don't open - it's a secured building - but we're on the ground floor, and the surrounding area is heavily landscaped. Last summer a roe deer with two fawns visited two or three times a week right outside the nearest window, munching on the expensively-manicured foreign plants. Cuteness.

I won't ever see deer outside this window...

If I lean back, I can see a HUMVEE, and if I roll towards my cube mate, I can see a Bradley IFV...

    😀

Window? I can see the printer from here, and if I look around, I can see walls, cube walls and oh! An exotic fire extinguisher in the wild! (sshhh, you'll scare it off!)

yeah, we had an exceptionally dusty pigeon fly into our transom window at home. Flew off after, although a little drunkenly. I told my wife an angel had visited...she didn't buy it.

    Guys,

The flowchart thing worked wonderfully. The kids had a blast.

The first thing I said was "How many of you play video games?" The answer, of course, was all of them. And then I said, "You know all those trophies, coins, and treasures you get during the game? A database stores this information. My job is to track how many the game has available and what you have in your inventory."

I had them eating out of my hand at that point.

I showed them how the flow chart process works by "programming" a burger. Then I gave them individual sheets and asked them what they wanted to program. We programmed pizza and an ice cream sundae. The girl in the group loved it so much that she wanted to do another one, so we programmed her gymnastics class starting at home and all the things she had to do to get to class, do during class, and getting home. She even let me show her how to use the decision diamond.

All I used was a flip chart (needed big pages for the drawing) and multiple colored markers. I did copy the 5 most common symbols into a word doc and print out copies so the kids had something to refer to. The girl even took her symbol sheet home with her.

She had such an energy to her when she went to work on that chart. I think we have a programmer in the making now.

    Awesome!

Stefan, I'm about to credit you in my blogpost about this whole thing. Is there a website or a LinkedIn profile page you'd like me to link to?

My post about this will go live tomorrow around noon. I'll post a more specific permalink later.

    Thanks!

I suppose the only thing I really have to link to would be my moribund SQL Server/programming blog? http://sqlserver.thoughtstream.com/

If you don't want to link to something I update so rarely, that's fine too. I appreciate the mention though!

  • 14 days and change until I start my 2 week vacation...

18 days and change until I'm touching down in Jamaica for that vacation...

18 days and a bit more change until I'm being handed a cool towel and a rum punch to recuperate from the shuttle bus ride from the airport...

19 days until I get to surreptitously watch all the women in bikinis...

    😀

I am green with envy. I did not have any vacation in 8 years.

What is a vacation? I don't include time at the TitD as vacation time even though the parties are great and guard hippo funny to watch (just don't laugh out loud).

  • Thanks all!

I am going to be *SO* useless the 24th at work...

Or as several co-workers have commented, "more than usual?"
