Are the posted questions getting worse?

    unlike all of you guys who completed all their tax paperwork in January and already got your refunds back, my yesterday was

    non stop juggling of funds so I could write a bit checks to my retirement and then the IRS before the April 15th deadline;

    Personally I'm sapped emotionally from all the hoop-jumping.

    And I'm stuck with doing a foreign assets return in a foreign language (Spanish) by the end of the month, which in practise means the end of this week since I'll be travelling on Saturday and don't return until 6 May. And unlike in the UK to get to submit stuff electronically I have to turn up in a government office and demonstrate my identity in order to get an electronic id acceptable to the Spanish government, and government offices are so deadly sloe around here (and so far away from where I'm living) that it will be a real pain to do that and my earliest possible day for doing that is Friday (because of other comitments) and it may not work even then - until then, I can't even get hold of a copy of the form, the website requires me to identify myself with the formal electronic id before it will show me one.

    I thought the UK system was bad until I discovered this one. And the penalty for delaying submission until after the end of the month is 10000 Euros plus a surcharge on the tax due (which happens to be 0, but that won't reduce the 10000 base penalty). this was all sprung upon us expats quite recently - the relevant tax had been temporarily suspended years ago, and was only reintroduced recently.

    Hey Brandie, speaking of your account problems, did you ever get the problem where you can't get DMs fixed?

    No. I thought I was about to, but I never heard back from the help desk after my last email.

    I did that the last week of March, somehow convinced tax day was April 1st. I pulled an April Fools Day prank on myself with that. @=)

    Then again, today I got my refund deposited, so I'm happy. @=)

    Oh, and hello again. Long time no talk. Brandie been busy.

  • So I have this ridiculous thought of doing a series of articles for my blog on how to build a SQL Server database for a comic book collection.

    What do you think? Should I do this?

    The ridiculous part is not writing it here 😉

    Go for it. It can serve as a tutorial for those wanting to learn how to design and develop a database. Especially true if you take the database through some schema changes as the requirements for the database expand.

    I've had a database design for this since the early 90s, but I never got around to putting it together.

    In the end, I ended up buying one from Collectorz.com. The database might not be as good as the one I put together (emphasis on "might", it is possible it is just as good), but they have scanner integration and a large on-line matching database for pre-scanner comics. Plus, you get downloads of all the covers with every scan.

    While I like the idea, the software I bought is only $45 for the full version w/ lifetime subscription. I don't know if the effort of doing it would be worth the time.

    This is true, it could be a very good tutorial example. With comics, you can start by collecting very simple data (Publisher, title, issue numbers) and rapidly expand to more data (dates, cover prices, writers, artists, inkers, letterers) and even more data (ratings, reviews, characters, guest appearances, crossovers, cover images), etc... Each stage is valuable and viable on its own.
