Are the posted questions getting worse?

    Ah, the week before X-Mas...

When everyone who could manage it, took the week off, and those who couldn't may as well have for all the "work" that gets done...

While there's generally fairly light traffic on my drive in to work, this morning looked like it was a weekend...

I just about could have blown most of the traffic lights on my way in, without any risk to myself or others...

I figure Friday is going to be even worse(?)

    Wouldn't that be better?

  • Has anyone else noticed that winter starts on the very same day that the world ends?

How does that work, wonders the author...

Happy Holidays for those currently celebrating, for those about to celebrate, and happy non-denominational generic unHoliday wishes for those who do not celebrate at all.

Well, OK, better in that there will be much less traffic, worse in that it'll be even harder to stay busy (at least until we shut down at about noon for the holiday / in-office party)

Yeah. Weird how the Mayans scheduled the end of the calendar for the winter solstice. What a weird thing to do.

Personally, I think the world ends every year. After all, my desk calendar ends every December. So the world must end. Just like for the Mayans, except significantly more frequently, and with less precision about starting/ending on the solstice.

On the other hand, I just had a great idea! There are so many fools suckers potential paying customers around that think the world will end when the Mayan calendar starts over! I should be selling "End of the World Insurance" to them. "For only $10/month, you can have insurance that will pay off all your bills and expenses in the case of the end of all life on Earth". "Make sure your loved ones won't be stuck with your debts and bills if the world ends on 21 Dec 12. For only $10/month ...."

Should have started selling it last year, of course, but still ...

Clearly the Mayans and Vikings knew each other. It is the start of Fimbulwinter.

Amusingly enough, Mayans vs Vikings is part of one of the dungeons in The Secret World. Apparently the Vikings brought Excalibur to North America and used it to fight some Mayans who were trying to wake up a dragon living under a mountain on an island off the Atlantic coast (near modern New England somewhere), and your character gets to smoke "something" and then travel through time in a dream and help the Vikings.

Of course, this is part of a game where the Illuminati headquarters in New York has PA announcements like, "Mandatory drug testing will take place in 2 hours. Please take drugs now."

Sure, that makes sense! : -)

Then there are the "theories" that Quetzocoatl was created because the Mayans saw a viking ship that made it all the way down to the Yucatan. The dragon head = snake + sail = wings.

  • I actually read a book where a Viking ship ended up in either the Mayan or the Aztec empire. As a mirror to the mortal struggle, the Viking gods ended up fighting the "American" gods because they found themselves being corrupted by all the darker rituals of the American tribes. And the natives were freaking out because they'd never seen iron weapons before.

It's free-to-play now. You still have to buy the game, but you don't have to pay a subscription.

It's an interesting game, but, true to FunCom's usual style, it's got significant problems built in.

For example, I like that it's character advancement mechanism isn't class-and-level. But they didn't ballance the different abilities available very well. To pick two, Elementalism and Blades: Both are damage builds (as opposed to tank or healer builds), but blades does about 5X the DPS of elementalism, and includes some built-in defenses that are substantial, as a trade-off for elementalism having a tiny bit of range. It doesn't balance out. In PvP, blades owns elementalism consistently, and in PvE, groups with blades-based DPS do much better than elementalism DPS.

Then there's Hammers. It's a tank ability set, but it's also got an attack that essentially makes all your other abilities kind of pointless, because it's so overpowered that anyone with it never bothers to use any other abilities.

Of course, you should see a Blades-Hammers build (you get two ability sets at a time, and any character can learn all of the sets if you take the time for it). Talk about ripping through the opposition like a buzzsaw! On the other hand, in PvP, you have to look hard to find anyone who is using ANY other ability sets besides those two.

Pistols is fun. If you ever saw Equilibrium, it's the gun katas straight up. Lots of Blades-Pistols characters named some variation on John Preston.

The newbie starting area, Kingston, is a zombie appocalypse zone. Streets named things like Dunwich Way, Elm Street, and so on. Very "The Fog", if you've ever seen any of those movies. Very entertaining.

I kept wanting to run a group of characters named Wichita, Columbus, Tallahasee, Little Rock ...

Anyway. It's entertaining. For about a week. Then it gets old. Really old. But definitely worth a shot if you're into zombie movies and MMOs.

But the vampires in it suck. 🙂
