Are the posted questions getting worse?

Budget cuts are the reason the first Death Star didn't have a grate or something covering the exhaust port.

Really? I always just assumed a Jawa stole the covering. "If it's not nailed down, it's mine. If I can pry it up, it's not nailed down." kind of thing.

I played a short-lived Starwars RPG game where one of the guys was playing a Jawa. Playing it very well I might add. I'm not sure which was harder in that game, evading the Sith or keeping the Jawa from stealing my lightsaber.

That sounds much like Sam Starfall.

Hm, steals everything, "owns" several robots of dubious origin, living on the fringes of society, known to everyone as a troublemaker....I think Sam might just be a Jawa

Hey, all. I don't know if I posted this before or not. If you're interested in writing, I have a special call that opens in February for science fiction / fantasy military fiction. What Honor Requires is the name of the call. The details can be found here: http://uraniaspecfic.blogspot.com/2012/08/what-honor-requires-special-call.html

Brandie, what's the general submission size you're looking for here? 4 page mag article, chapter, novella?

Also, I'm interested. Not sure what I want to do, but this seems like an awesome way to spread my wings a bit.

20,000 words or more. Novella / Novel. The crunchy bits (including the word count) are all in the call.

    *facepalm* Sorry, I'm blind.

    Genres: Science Fiction, Fantasy, Action/Adventure

    Heat Levels: 0-2

    Length: 20k+

What is a Heat Level? Can anyone tell me? I've never heard of that in this context.

I'm sorry I didn't respond to these last week. I was busy on an urgent project.

Heat levels have to do with romance & sex. More details on Musa's definitions are below.

0 – Stories with no romance and no sex. You can mention a guy’s girlfriend or that a woman goes to a brothel, but there will be no graphic details. It’s just a character fact or a background detail.

1 – Stories will either not have consummated love scenes, or if the loves scenes are consummated detail is not given. Sweet stories that usually result in no more then a kiss.

2 – Stories will have some love scenes. These will be more sensual then graphic and will mostly rely on euphemism.

3 – Stories will have sensual, yet more explicit love scenes, and the language used to describe them may be more graphic and direct.

4- Stories have frequent love scenes that are explicit and described using graphic and direct language.

5- Stories have a high frequency of love scenes that are explicit, described using graphic and direct language, and/or contain subject matter that some readers may consider objectionable. Including multiple partner, bdsm, menage.

Heat levels 3-5 get into erotica territory. Erotica goes to a different imprint and I don’t want stories driven by the sex or the romance. They can be an important part of storytelling and character motivation, but when the chips are down, the main motivator for the protagonist’s actions should be honor. That’s what this call is all about.

I love RPGs where things just flow like that and everyone can have fun.

  • Ah, the week before X-Mas...

When everyone who could manage it, took the week off, and those who couldn't may as well have for all the "work" that gets done...

While there's generally fairly light traffic on my drive in to work, this morning looked like it was a weekend...

I just about could have blown most of the traffic lights on my way in, without any risk to myself or others...

I figure Friday is going to be even worse(?)

  • As the holiday season rapidly approaches, I'd like to take a minute to wish everyone on this forum a Merry Christmas and very happy New Year.

The first anniversary of my very first posting will happen sometime in Jan. Over the past year I've made the acquaintance of some really great folks that I'm proud to call my friends. And in the new year I hope to make many more.

Be safe and enjoy the holidays!

My mantra: No loops! No CURSORs! No RBAR! Hoo-uh![/I]

My thought question: Have you ever been told that your query runs too fast?

    My advice:
INDEXing a poor-performing query is like putting sugar on cat food. Yeah, it probably tastes better but are you sure you want to eat it?
The path of least resistance can be a slippery slope. Take care that fixing your fixes of fixes doesn't snowball and end up costing you more than fixing the root cause would have in the first place.
