Personally, I am glad that Joe took the high road on that thread. Joe does get pedantic a lot - he knows it and said it. Typically I see his attacks on the code and not so much on the person.Targeting Joe and baiting him really needs to stop. And the same can be said of anybody else that has been personally attacked or been the recipient of piling on. The personality of SSC seems to be changing and not in a good way. People need to chill out and just get back to helping other SSC visitors.
Well said, sir.

I can't blame him for being defensive. Eugene basically invited Celko into that thread for the sole purpose of roasting him. There really was no excuse for pretending to have an open discussion just to flay the subject alive. That doesn't mean I disagree with general consensus, but really, that was a harsh thing to do to a person.
Agreed! And I think Steve did absolutely the right thing by locking that thread.

I've been saying it for a while. I agree. If silly questions or unhelpful questioners bug you, stop answering. Do whatever you have to in order maintain a friendly cordial atmosphere. We're supposed to be helping, when, where and if we can.

Agreed (with both Brandie and Paul).

Yes, it's not good that things get that way. I'll tell JC when I think he's got somethiong seriously wrong technically - doesn't happen often. Mostly I'll avoid piling in on him (and staying out of that thread was hard, but rather than adding to the pile I almost joined in on his side there).

And here's him correcting me on something that I have been wrong about for a decade or more - and his comment doesn't have any of the stuff that people (including me) deprecate in some of his posts. Strangely, in the contact (all electronic) I've had with him oustide SQLServerCentral, this has been his normal style - no bullying, no pedantry, all good stuff. I was very happy to see him do it here too.

Here is an individual looking for guidance on taking a certification exam. I above all or maybe that should be below all is the least qualified to give the individual some advice.
Wondering if the denizens of the thread who are eminently more qualified than mysefl would jump in and share their thoughts and guidance.

I wish JC would get that same message. His last couple of posts haven't been as bad as usual so maybe he's finally "getting it" although I still don't appreciate his "inverted"/passive-aggressive name calling such as "real SQL programmers don't use IDENTITY". People say he's a nice guy in person but I don't actually care about that because his on-line persona and a good deal of his opinions really suck. Any dog-piling he's been given has been well deserved in my opinion. The only bad part about that is it doesn't look very good no matter who does it.
It's a real shame. The guy could be one hell of a mentor.

It's usually not the questions or the questioners that bug me. I also have to disagree with the others. Joe normally DOES attack the person but he does it in a very passive-agressive manner such as the example in my previous post above.

I'm not getting what this guy is after, so I'm clearly not helping. Could someone else check it out please?
Oh, and don't pile on the poor guy. I just mean I don't get what he needs and clearly someone else may help better. I'm not trying to bring the thunder down on him. Be nice.

My guess would be that he wants timings on insertion rates in SQL Server, ie how long to insert 1 row, how long 5 rows etc and possibly per row timing as well. He looks like he is asking the best method how set the system to a level playing field for each test.
Far away is close at hand in the images of elsewhere.

So, this is interesting.
A coworker sent me a link to a differential backup file named .dif that I was supposed to be restoring. Silly me, I didn't look at the link before clicking and didn't realize he included the file name at the end of the link.
Would you believe the .dif file opened up in Excel? It was completely unreadable, but it opened up in Excel.
I'm mildly amused by this. Even more amused by the fact that the backup still worked in the restore after I closed the worksheet. (Fortunately, I didn't make any changes to the garbage or hit save).

Wow, I wonder why you have .dif associated with excel. I wonder if that's a default association.

Well, if Wikipedia is to be believed, this could be the issue. (Which I didn't research until after reading your comment.)

I tried my best, but it is an awful question. If I had seen it on http://dba.stackexchange.com/ or http://stackoverflow.com/ I would likely have down-voted it and moved on.

That was a very thorough answer. I'll bet you it's not what he wants though. I'm still not sure where he's trying to get to.
