Does EXCEL handle that many columns? I didn't think it did (well, reasonably anyway) but I've certainly been inaccurate before. No, it doesn't. If I understand it correctly EXCEL 2007 and EXCEL 2010 both have a limit of 16,384 columns (but something over a million rows). With EXCEL 2010 you can populate a lot more of those cells in the 64-bit version than in the 32-bit version but that doesn't help if what you want is 150,000 columns.
You're forgetting that 150,000 columns can be put into 10 worksheets (15K at a time). 😀
Yes, of course. Why on earth did I reject that approach? :hehe:
In fact I guess I could even do it with my faithful old Office 2000, using 586 worksheets. 🙂
Now, where did I put that Office 2000 CD? :w00t:

1,048,576 rows by 16,384 columns according to MS Office site. Didn't someone say that the PowerPivot example at PASS a year or two back was running 11 million rows? How did they accomplish that?

PowerPivot is not the same as Excel.
The PowerPivot window (where you make the model), has the 11 million rows. In Excel you just pivot over those rows. That's the reason PowerPivot doesn't support drillthrough, as you cannot drillthrough more than one million rows in Excel.

PowerPivot can handle upwards of 100M rows.
And Excel 2010 1.4M rows.
PowerPivot is an add in to Excel, and there is also a server product that can be used with SharePoint 2010.
Part of what it can handle is based on how you are using it, whether standalone or with a data model deployed to the server.
More options, although there are some differences between PowerPivot and the more traditional Pivot Tables.

Nothing wrong with this maintenance plan. I mean, everything is covered:
1. Check DB Integrity
2. Back Up Db Full
3. Back up Db transaction log
4. Shrink Db
5. Rebuild index
6. Update statistics
7. Reorganize Index
8. Clean up history
9. maintenace clean up task ( which will dlete the .bak and .trn files which are older than 3 days.

I don't see what the problem is. At least the kitchen sink isn't included. Or the baby & bathwater.

Well, they've only been shrinking the database nightly for three months running...

I'll be honest, at one time, I would have made a maintenance plan similar to that. Worse, I'd have the cleanup looking for .bak / .trn, so it actually wouldn't clean up anything.
It's one of those things that (obviously) comes from experience. Sure, if you've been doing this for years, and know better, it can be frustrating to deal with someone who thinks this is "right," but give them credit for trying.
At least they weren't running it hourly, right?:hehe:

But surely shrinking the database is necessary. You know, to reclaim all that space that autogrow keeps claiming when it doesn't actually need it.
And that reminds me. I keep forgetting to turn on auto_close. @=)
(and, yes, I am actually joking).

I just encountered two doing the exact same thing - both on the same server running at the same time...
